From the opening bars, this sounds like a gentle flowing track that allows the listener to imagine sitting on a cooling beach at night in some tropical island as the stars twinkle and the moon shimmers on the gently lapping waves on the white sand shore. Beautiful. However, listen to the lyrics a little more carefully and it is clear that the opening and title track of this 5 track EP is not quite the shallow feel good music that the music let’s you imagine it to be. This song is singer/song writer’s Daniel Wylie’s observation of a drunk girl taking heroin for the first time. So appalled was Daniel at seeing this at the party and how the host could allow this to happen, he has not spoken with the party’s host since. And so the first track sets out the feel of the EP in it’s entirety. It appears I am a total fucking idiot. Evidence can be found here and here where it appears every other person who had the misfortune to hear Orange's first album likened it to shitting out your ears. I quite liked it. I thought it had a few numbers on it that hooked into my brain straight away and stayed there and I liked the sloppy, casual guitars. The vocals, stuck somewhere between Splodgenessabounds and Rancid, were a change from what most punk bands were doing at the time and, all in all, it was a fantastic debut album from four teenagers with a lot of potential. But that was "Welcome To The World Of Orange" and this isn't. How will their second album sound? Part of me is worrying of the dreaded second album syndrome, especially as they were so young last time, that that swagger and snot-nosed charm that I loved first time round has gone. Ally Kerr. What can I say about Ally Kerr? A lot of things actually – very few (if any) of them complimentary. This wee tune, Without You, taken from his self-funded album, Calling Out To You, is “…one of the most beautiful songs you’re likely to hear all year long…” according to the bumff on the back of the CD cover. Well, forgive me for differing but this tune is the biggest pile of shite you’re likely to hear all year long. The vocals are very James Iha circa ‘Take me Down’ – peely-wally, dishwater-tea kind of singing. There is nothing about Kerr’s voice that I find appealing. The backing vocals are the kind of wispy blonde-in-floaty-dress awfulness that appeared in the ice-cream jingle tunes Damon Albarn had a penchant for sticking onto the end of, otherwise decent, Blur albums. The music itself starts as an attempt at Sunday morning easy listening and quickly degenerates into the kind of plinky plunky arse your 14year old brother, just learning to play...
