The battery lid was closed fine, it's a very tight seal.

Dodgy cables was my thought. but since the cable worked for the guitar I eventually used and not mine, the cable was probably ok.

Yeah, this is my main thought. If the DI box was sending power up the lead, I didn't look closely at the Jackplug to see if it was a 'stereo' one with a power channel.
The thing that makes me think this is happening is that the Battery light came on with the ead plugged in. It should of only came on with a flat battery, and I had a fresh one in. Plus, when a 'normal' patch lead was plugged in to tune it, the light didn't come on.
