Re: Media players... suggestions...

i'm not quite sure what you mean by that.

it syncs with iTunes perfectly; all your iTunes songs / playlists appear in serato... and it plays either MP3s or AACs (as long as they're not protected).

You can set five cue points and nine loops per track which are stored as tags in the files themselves, so for example if there's a song that you always skip the first minute of, set a cue point there and that's where it'll start playing from...

one good (and cheap) solution might be to spend £17 on a USB Griffin iMic thingy, which gives you a second audio output, and use serato through your headphone socket and iTunes through the USB iMic thing.

the best solution for any form of DJing involving a laptop is to buy the serato hardware box, which then gives you two virtual decks on your laptop and the ability to control them with several kinds of external hardware, but even just with the laptop it's phenomenal.

but yeah, even without it's great for organising and cueing tracks...

Another solution might be to look at PCDJ, it's not quite as full-featured as Virtual DJ as mentioned above but it's much cheaper: there's two versions which are roughly £45 or £55, the biggest difference being that you get a pitch lock on the more expensive one so you can change the speed without affecting the pitch.

Free demo download (gives you one month i think) here:

http://www.pcdj.com/products/dj-software/red

This would also work much better with a griffin iMic giving you a second audio output from your laptop - so for sixty quid all in you'd have a very usable solution; I used it alongside my CDs for a while before I bought Serato...

and have a look; without paying £400 for the hardware you can't control it with decks / CD players but it's still GREAT just using the laptop.
Can you use serato without any hardware? I'm sure it just says no hardware attached.

edit: Seems you can but you don't seem to get the two decks option.

yup

just mentioned that since original post says currently using iTunes, so certainly a step up from that even with only one deck

That's never happened to me with it, but I'm using v6 as i prefer it to v7. If you want a copy of that version then i can email it to you.
