| Re: distortion..preamp or pedals : discuss The Steve McKinley Hottie Blonde modded Boss DS-1 is one of the best pedals I've ever bought. The distortion is just so textured and gorgeous. This is from the same company who make vintage toasters into amplifiers! Seriously cool. http://www.mindspring.com/~stevemcki...nics/id13.html |

| Re: distortion..preamp or pedals : discuss I'm a proper amp distortion guy, although i did get a lovely Tubescreamer style pedal custom built for me which sound wicked when you fire it in front of a good clean valve amp...... |

| Re: distortion..preamp or pedals : discuss I'm friendly with a band that don't use amps at all live, just Line 6 XT Live's.
They sounded awful until I suggested getting a small 2 channel valve pre amp for the level to go through before the PA.
Sounds pretty fuking awesome, if not looking a little strange. |

| Re: distortion..preamp or pedals : discuss Oh and to answer the quiestion properly.
After hearing the roar of a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier, Mesa Boogie Mark 3, Mesa Boogie Mark 4, Peavey 6505 and a VHT Sig X all in ONE DAY, I can concur, I pretty much stand by amp distortion. |

| Re: distortion..preamp or pedals : discuss When I play guitar I keep it simple.
I run my guitar into a wah pedal then into a tuner pedal into the front of a Marshall AVT150 Half Stack. (Peavy Bandit 112 80watt in the bedroom). I then run my EQ pedal through my effects loop. But I swear by Amp distortion. I recon it's good to have an overdrive pedal kicking about incase you go to a gig and don't take your amp and you are faced with some pishy wee combo lol.
I'll stick a picture of all my gear on the show me yours thread when I get a camera sorted haha! |

| Re: distortion..preamp or pedals : discuss unless your willing to pay £150 odd plus for a distortion pedal your going to get shite live results compared to a well set up amp. |

| Re: distortion..preamp or pedals : discuss Boss GT-6, 7 & 8
Line 6 XT-Live
Flynn Amps "Rory Gallagher" Hawk
Mesa/Boogie V-Twin (more like £800)
Carl Martyn Custom jobs
Boss OD20
MXR Custom Shops
There's loads of boutique single & Multi Pedals out there that are well over £150, The Boss stuff at £80-£90 is okay, but sounds paper thin live. |

| Re: distortion..preamp or pedals : discuss Oh right, I thought he was talking about singles.
I'd never consider paying more than £100 for a single pedal, multiple effects processors with pedal triggers maybe (Which conversely I have never paid less than £200 for.) but I can see how it would be a fine line between the two for some.

| Re: distortion..preamp or pedals : discuss I'm sure there's a guy who does custom jobs on Boss pedals and sell for around £200.
I've also heard they are in fact awesome.
This is all I need mind you. |

| Re: distortion..preamp or pedals : discuss If I was to buy some pedals again they would be...
TC Nova System
Xotic BB Preamp
Also still fancy an MXR EVH Phaser.
Still itching to try one of those AXE-FX Ultra preamps. |

| Re: distortion..preamp or pedals : discuss I just got mine fixed the other day, it's sounding awesome with the brand new JJ 6L6 tubes.
I won't tell the story of why it needed fixed or how it eneded up being fixed, it's embarassing.
I love the gain on Channel 2, Channel 3 is almost too insane.
Got Dav'es Mesa Boogie MK3 in the other room and Nick's Engl 4 x 12, I'd love to just daisy chain the lot for a pure laugh, but i'll get murdered. |
