There are certain medical reasons for male circumcision, but as far as I'm aware, female genital mutilation has no medical basis and is done principally for religious reasons. But banning piercing is going a bit overboard, I think.

I'm not getting into female circumcision, as far as I can see there's nowt to back that up, ever. I don't understand the physical logistics of clit piercing either so I'm not getting into that!

Charlicat - interesting link, but there are studies to prove and/or disprove almost anything. If someone can find figures it'd be interesting, but America (land of the em, "forced penis modification") has a much higher rate of HIV than Europe, no?

Nope, but in an area like this what I'm saying is take it with a pinch of salt. Remember that this is a practice that's basically based on superstitious reasons (and by superstitious reasons I'm not having a go at religion, I'm referring to the fact that they started cutting off foreskins because they thought it would be a "cure" for masturbation and epilepsy etc).

I've just done a quick PubMed search on male circumcision as a method of reducing the risk of HIV transmission, and there's a considerable body of evidence supporting it.
