i've been told in the past that my piercings and stuff can be initialy intimidating but i'm a decent person and most people given a few seconds can see that im more than a few bits of metal.
people don't take offence to piercings usulay, they just use them as an easy way to take offence at you. | I'm really offended by that...(!)
Come on, I don't think that assuming that a person would go in 'all guns blazing' is a little narrow minded.... I've never not got on with a person because of my piercings/tattoos, I know a whole bunch of people who see the real me, and know who I am, as with anybody with piercings/tattoos. The real problem is that people STILL frown upon piercings/tattoos as generally tattoos were for Borstall men and rough women (as my mum would put it!) and piercings are 'disfiguration' in terms of trying to get a job in an office.
I'm moaning about the fact that piercings and tattoos are frowned upon my my parents generation, and even by people like my form tutor (who was a goth and was into blood letting and stuff).
If anybody knew me, then they would actually know that I only have one obvious piercing (lip) and my ears which people can see. Then you would also know that in general I'm a pretty laid back open minded person that works in a pub and gets on with a whole manner of people. AT SCHOOL, however, it was a different story, as piercings were not accepted, which brings us right back round to the original point, should school children be allowed piercings? (other than ears)

| Re: Nipples that was never the original question... nor did you put it forward as such.
and take offence if you like, no skin off my nose.
most of my family don't like my piercings but they don't treat me differently for them. i'm the youngest person in my work (of 400 staff) and the most modified and i don't get treated any differently by my team, by management or by anyone else. i have a fairly well paid job for my age and experience. i did work in a customer facing job with 10mm lobes lip and septum piercings visible and never had any complaints.
the school will pull you up for health and safety with any piercings even ears. part of the ciriculum is that you do PE and Drama if avaliable, and how do you propose to be safe to yourself and others when you insist on wearing metal in your face. so no, school children should not be allowed piercings, unless they are fully healed and can be removed as and when required. |

That being said it doesn't lessen or take away from the fact piercings and tattoos should still require some bloody thought before you get them done and I really don't reckon you should be alowed your nipples pierced until your 18 for the reasons I said before. It's smart practice really and covers everyones backs. The girl that isn't completely developed at 14, and the piercer who's in no way at risk of piercing a minor if he checks ID. | I meant more like, thing's underagers would get. Although I can imagine groups of kids comparing horn implants in the playground |

I never had any bother with piercings at school, had to put a plaster over them in PE but that was it, it wasn't an issue. It WAS an issue for the folk who were known troublemakers, just because it was another thing they could get a row for. Such as the classic, "TAKE OUT THAT TONGUE EARRING! IT COULD GET CAUGHT ON SOMETHING!" |

Why would ears be OK and other things not? |

As more and more people got pierced they laxed it a bit though it was still written down in the handbook and you wouldn't get disciplined as long as you had a stud or say a bar with balls on the end or a retainer in your piercings. Anything else and they'd make you take it out for health and safety which is fair enough.
It's being pretty decent of them I thought.
The reason they said ear piercings and studs was probably because it's so common place and they didn't really think kids would go to school with much else besides their ears pierced. Granted I'd say piercings in general are pretty common. Nothing changes overnight though. I can imagine they'd probably review the rule as they see fit anyway. Lets face it. Either way, they're hardly going to advertise that they approve of underage kids getting everything under the sun pierced are they?! (ie - "yeah, whatever age you are, as long as you have fairly sensible jewellery in we'll say damn all" :/ Can't see that going down too well with the parental masses
They'd have the PTA all over their asses within about 10 seconds of that rule going to print.
...not to mention the local newspapers, and the parents, and the council prob. |

| Yeah same here, health and safety I can understand (I can only assume that there'd be hell to pay if someone ended up having one ripped out), prudishness I can't. |

| Re: Nipples I'm 19, I left school 3 years ago. I can't understand why people just can't accept the difference in opinion from different places. My school hated piercings, and expelled kids for having piercings (as did many schools in my area, and still do) therefore, I find it irresponsible of a piercing parlour to pierce younger people when their education could potentially be ruined because of predjudice from schools.
My boyfriend is 20, and his mum hates all his piercings (which incedently he's taken out recently) and my mother hates mine, it doesn't mke he look down on me, she just thinks I won't be able to get a 'proper' job, but I don't get treated any differently at my work for having facial piercings (infact one of my managers is looking into getting his lip pierced) also don't get treated any differently anywhere else now I'm an adult, but when I was younger, I felt like ANYBODY with piercings was discriminated against, and it was the general consensus of all my peers.

i'd love to see the paperwork for that, i honestly would. i'm sure they like to threatn people with suspensions and expulsion based on body mods, but it goes outside the school as well and you can bet that there would be uproar when the council got hold of the report that said "student kicked out of school for eyebrow piercing" |
