Giant 10 Easy Wishes sig eh?

I'd say Aberdeen has an amazing scene but the assholes spoil it. Those in bands and those that aren't in bands. I think Aileen knows what I mean even if she doesn't post it online...

Re: Aberdeen-music.com

aberdeen has a healthy music scene, but it just got a whole lot worse with drakes closing.

there are a lot of very good people working hard in aberdeen.

and there are assholes on ab-music.com - but it s amessageboard at the end of the day and i think if you meet the people from it you will find that they are genuine nice people (i am a case of this i think :P )

i was never realy involved with the scene until about a year or so ago, i have made some excellent friends who i can kip on their floor for a weekend when i am north and vice versa

Drakes closing is one of the worst things that could have happened to the Aberdeen music scene.

You have to remember that, as with any messageboard, there's wind-up merchants galore on a-m.com

(Me too LOL!)

EDIT: I meant that to read as... I also come across as an asshole sometimes, and some people that have met me in real life would tell you err... that I'm a genuine asshole LMAO.

Re: Aberdeen-music.com

I'm not sure that (we three aside) everyone realises just what a loss Drakes is.

Virtually every local band that has played The Moorings in the past year had their first ever gig at Drakes. Now while I'm happy to give bands their first gig (and we did as in the case of AKA The Fox and some others), but we can only host music 3 nights a week, and only 2 of those nights have scope for first time gigs. That's not a huge window of opportunity for new bands to get some gigs under their belts.

It strikes me that a lot of people bemoaning the loss of Drakes only attended when they were invited to play a gig there, and possibly getting paid for it.

Drakes had a lot going for it as a micro venue. The size and layout meant that bands could play entirely through their backline with only vocals through the rig. This made is easy for even novice bands to get a decent sound, cos at the end of the day the main function of the rig is to replicate the backline sound and carry it further. Bands that had an inkling of how to control the volume of their amps got a great sound at Drakes. Black Atom in particular always sounded amazing there.

Then there was the living room thing. You were never more than a few feet from the performers, sometimes only inches LOL. It was like your own personal gig.

As a businessman it's obvious to me that a venue like Drakes was always going to be a labour of love / survival problem rather than a means of making a decent living. Hats off to everyone that kept it going for so long - it can't have been easy.

If the council really did care about music in Aberdeen then they'd provide funding to Drakes... they could start by taking 5% out of their Lemon Tree budget! I for one wouldn't argue with Drakes receiving a subsidy. IMO Drakes existence was extremely beneficial to The Moorings.

Of course in a town where local bands playing original material rarely even make the local press this is never going to happen. Mores the pity.

Aberdeen-Music can either be really funny or affa dull, but there are some classic threads (Best Photo Ever, Neighbours) not to mention some of the arguements can provide literally minutes of entertainment. Oh and sometimes you can discuss music on it.
Drakes was a nice space, but Flash, your sound system could have melted the PA in there just by looking at it funny.

Re: Aberdeen-music.com

I ake back what i said earlier in this thread after speaking ot one of the aubl promoters. He told me someone private messaged him looking for a fight on aubl and named a time and a place even however never turned up lol.

I have noticed the tendency of people to have the balls to say somethings on the forums yet not to peoples faces. I try to be hojnest to an artist even musicians and will tell tehm they played shit if i believe they did howver i refuse to be sycophanitc or a crawler. WEllunless perhaps theres a lady in the band
