| some questions about high school *ugh*
Okay, the kid is embarking upon secondary education after the summer and apart from shiting it about, well, just about everything (me, not her) one thing that is particularly concerning me is the situation at lunchtime. I went to my granny's at lunchtime when I was at high school, but this won't be an option for us, we live too far away, and without coming across as a total idiot parent, do High School kids take packed lunches or is that a total embarrassment these days? I would prefer no replies saying I should just supply her with enough money for chips and fags please. |

| Re: some questions about high school Being honest packl unches can be a bit of embarrassment in later years of highschool , but just now it will be fine. what about just sitting in the school cantine for lunch. They do healthy menus now.

at my school a lot of 5th/6th years had packed lunches so that we weren't in the canteen, we could eat in the common room |

| Re: some questions about high school when i was at highschool packed lunches were fine. i think as long as its not stinking egg sandwiches and flasks of soup its fine. cafeterias can be murder to get lunch. massive big queues and stuff like that. mind you id rather have a packed lunch than buy lunch. why pay money when you have the stuff at home?
also i just realised i said 'when i was at highschool'..... i left 9 years ago i think the times have changed a little. however i still thank packed lunches will be ok.

Yeah, I'm clued up enough to know the horror of the eggy piece that's been in a sweaty rucksack all morning. Eryn seems okay with the packed lunch, I just genuinely didn't know if it was a pure red neck these days. I left school so long ago |

Doubt that will be the case tho! Just make it clear, however, that it wont be like that everyday |

I quite liked getting packed lunches, although it was pretty annoying seeing other people with chips/rolls and bacon etc that looked ten times more appealing that a piece and corned beef. If there was more variation to my packed lunches then it would have probably gone down better but with my mum having to make 3 packed lunches a day, she was probably just as bored making them as I was eating them.
Loads of kids in my school brought them. I'd say tough luck if it causes embarassment. Infact, make her wear hi-tec trainers as well, its all part of the learning process |

Also, a piece on corned beef could be the best piece known to man.

Thinking back i very rarely brought a packed lunch, i usually stayed in the canteen or sampled the delights of the local shop/takeaway. But in saying that i'm having a hard time understanding why bringing one would be considered embarrassing? Besides the aforementioned egg sandwiches of course. |

| Re: some questions about high school I'd give her both if you are really worried about it.
If it was me i'd just give her a packed lunch as there will be a lot of other children with one and you'll know she's eating properly.

| Re: some questions about high school without trying to sound patronising or anything, could she not just decide herself? or is she unsure as well. just that was the first thing that i thought of, "let her choose what she wants"?
in response to your question i don't really remember thinking "ugh how uncool to have apacked lunch" never did it myself though, too much effort!
actually only did it a few times when i wanted to pretend to my mum i was going money lunch so i could keep the money. you probably don't want to hear about that though |

| Re: some questions about high school Aye, it's pretty simple to say "kid, do you want me to give you a packed lunch or would you rather get something from the cafeteria?", that way she can sort it out herself.
I always wanted a packed lunch, I envied the kids who got to bring in and eat whatever the hell they felt like eating rather than being restricted by a menu, but the maw never really had the time so it never happened. Going 'round the corner to Rajas with the lads at lunchtime for a donner is probably my fondest memory of High School, right enough. |
