| Explaining death to a child So today at some point Jacks hamster has died, (the most lovely hamster ever!)
and i'm looking for some pointers on how to explain this to him.
He knows that things die, and he often 'plays dead' but he doesn't really understand the concept of death as i've never had to explain it to him.
I know that i would like to teach him about burial, so i'm gonna get a box, let him draw on it, and let him bury Chip Patch.
I just dont know how to explain to a 3 year old that these things happen...

| Re: Explaining death to a child You could put it in his bed so that he freaks out when he wakes up, then he'll just be relieved when you chuck it in the bin.
OR just tell him it died, talk about the different views of what happens to things when they die and let him ask questions if he wants to. He might not be fussed if you don't make a massive deal out of it....OR - tell him that dead hamsters make trees and bury him with some seeds

In all honesty, I'd be at a total loss as well, I'm awful with kids.

| Re: Explaining death to a child i think generally at the age of 3, he isn't going to understand, no matter which way you explain it. you could sugar coat it, or tell the harsh reality. either, way, he'll probably nod then ask for a new hamster.
