| For the Rugby Players of the Forum What age do classes start for kiddies to play Rugby?
I know you get SoccerTots and suchlike, but wondered if there was a Rugby equivalent. Figure I might try and put Eli's love of running into people and knocking them over into something constructive
Oh, and if you know of any classes, can parents help/join in? Eli would need a lot of guidance.

| Re: For the Rugby Players of the Forum I started playing at 8 years old. Mini rugby is the game and is very different and more kid friendly than the adult version. I know my old club and many others now run a mini-mini program with kids from 5-7 sometimes as young as 4 but it's not as common.
The youth sections are always very keen and welcoming on parents getting involved and helping especially at the younger age groups. Take a trip down to Cartha Queens Park Rugby Club and they should be able to tell you everything you need to know about their youth section.
RCOSD on here should have the phone number for the youth secetary co-ordinator guy at Cartha.

| Re: For the Rugby Players of the Forum Cheers.
Bit of forward planning on my part, he's still a wee yin and 4 in October, but after a day of Eli battering me over and laughing it seems a good route for him to go down in the future! Doesn't like football, but loves running, bashing into folk and being knocked over, and combining this with him being 3'5 and a wee bruiser it's the best sport I could think of!

| Re: For the Rugby Players of the Forum I'm southside, but trying to move to west of the city
Can't imagine taking him to football, doesn't like it at all, and his Dad hates all sport, so is up to me to find stuff he'll enjoy. It'd be nice to be able to take him to something like this just now, but I'm guessing they worry about how rough it'd be on a toddler!

| Re: For the Rugby Players of the Forum What Justin Liger said. Mini's was great at the time and it was never anything too rough or intense.
Although, Uddingston RFC all the way.
Also Cartha QP play in awful rugby tops...

New Image Rugby
Age 8 - 14
The aim for New Image Rugby is to introduce rugby in a safe environment, with the emphasis in each session being enjoyment. The Scottish Rugby Union organise annual New Image Festivals, where teams come together and play in 'round-robin' tournaments. In Season 2000/2001, over 40,000 children took part in these festivals.
Mini Rugby
Age 8 - 11
Mini rugby is a modified game of contact rugby designed to develop progressively the skills of rugby.
Tag Rugby
Age 8 onwards
This is a relatively new version of the game, designed to bridge the gap between non-contact New Image Rugby and full contact Mini Rugby. In Tag Rugby, players wear a light belt with two ribbons attached to it by velcro. A "tackle" is simply the removal of one of two tags by a defender.
This is a fun game that can be played by the whole family.
| The SRU used to have a great section on mini and midi rugby but it appears to have vanished.
However they do have club listings on their website which actually also used to be a lot more useful then it is now. Shite redesign. |

Rugby as a child was far more fun than football, and seemed to have a better atmosphere.

| Re: For the Rugby Players of the Forum We used to be quite good with my age group.
But aye, rubbish last season. 18 games played, 18 games lost. Relegated into Hydro West Divison 2.
At least we have a nice top right?

Auldhouse was great as there was effectively no curfew. GHA, every social event yer out at 11pm sharp and told to go quietly in case you upset the residents. |

| Re: For the Rugby Players of the Forum I have no big love for Cartha I just mentioned them as a southside club with a good youth set up.
As I said although there is no formal guideline for rugby below 8 many teams with well developed youth sections have a mini mini section for ages 5-7.
Uddingstone have hideous tops. Cartha's are pretty bad as well. Dalziel have the best tops.
