Vaccinations and microchipping all done?
If so, try a relatively safe area, such as a secure garden, and keep an eye on things for a while to make sure there's no problems.
Also, when it's dinner time, make dinner as delicious-smelling and yummy as possible, so they keep associating meals with home.

They tend not to stray too far when they're exploring the first time. Just make sure you're there to show them the way back into the house, and definitely agree with goth_pixie's nice smelling dinner suggestion. | |

We sat with her while she had a scout around. She seemed quite happy until some dogs came past! She's back in now.

My flatmate swears by the butter on the paws trick. Her family did that every time they moved house and never lost a cat.

Makes them sit outside the door in the one spot for a couple of minutes licking it off, making that area smell a hell of a lot more like them than anywhere they've just casually walked past.
