There's a knack to making sure you're fully blinding yourself when holding a flashgun at arm's length.

Oh! Also there was a cable connecting the flashgun to the camera.
1/100, f11, ISO 100. Flash fired at full power. Trial and error, is the thing.

On a slightly more relevant note, the lighting, while rather pretty, gives this strange impression of underweight-ness (possibly due to the invisibility of her back), and the lower hand looks strangely disconnected like it has left its own body and crawled there of its own will. It's quite eerie. And I have a sudden desire to feed my starving brain.
