[Assignment] Photography Challenge/Game #1 [lampposts]

Hello AN Photo Forum peoples, lets all take some pics

Photo scavenger hunt type things can be good for everyone to be looking at things fresh and maybe getting some nice new pics to share.


This turn I am nominating LAMPPOSTS, or "street lights" for the posh types.

Inspirational idea words:

Take a snap of a single lamppost or a whole street row of them, lit up at night is fancy, in daylight they can make interesting silhouettes. They can be attractive and enhance the area or ugly but still oddly interesting. Close ups for details on the lamp, farther away they can nicely frame a scene.

Camera & photographic ability are totally OPTIONAL, quick lunchtime phone cam snaps can have just as much interest & appeal as stuff from those weirdos with expensive gear and hours to compose & retouch arty images.

No rules but no cheating and using old photos mind, go get new ones or it's no fun!
Also notice the lack of "Weekly" or "Monthly" in the thread title, I ain't committing

Incidentally I have no preplanned ideas for my own lamp post photos it was just a thing word that came to mind that I know everyone should be able to find...!

well timed, if you'd put this up on thursday i feel confident people would have deided to take photos from the top of a lamppost on the way home from bamboo!

Took this earlier today. Still not sure if i like it, or even if i prefer it to a couple of similar ones i took, but it's not awful anyway.

I quite like it - is that the Kelvin Stevenson Memorial Church? (on ermm, Bank St at the bridge over the Kelvin)

ok, i have no experience at all when it comes to taking photos and will be using either a Sony Ericsson K800i (3.2) or a Samsung G600 (5.0) for every shot, however, i do really like photography and seeing some of the things you guys can come up with, so here are mine....

I'm really tempted to borrow the originals of these and have a go at tweaking them. There is something that looks just a tad off in them, but I can't quite put my finger on it.

AAAH no way! This is wierd! Theres a lamp post along the road from me which I love! ( dont worry i dont have a random fetish for lamp posts, there is a reason) For years someone, no idea who, has been glueing things to it, and over the years it has built up, looks so cool. I have one dodgy photo of it, but im gonna take proper ones, cos its jus so smashin! ( btw I have no idea how to resize this pic so it dont attack the page in such an aggressive manner!

Aye i think so. Didn't pay much attention to the name. But it is by the bridge over the kelvin. Think it's belmont street it's on.

Took this aaaages ago (is that allowed)...would have liked to find the original so I could re-do the post-processing but I can't.

That first one has had the colours come out like firey smoke rather than just normal sodium street light yellow! A bit too blurry for me though and so it loses my attention BUT - I actually really like how the taxi looks in it, they must suit the orange street lighting or something - worth knowing for another time!
The second one is an okay abstract light swooshy - if you like that sort of thing then you should try similar with having different coloured lights in the picture (ermm, like traffic lights or having a white light as well as yellow) could work quite well.

One thing though, I reckon camera phones don't do too well with night scenes unless you can use the flash to highlight some detail.
It's something that everyone has to deal with even if they have top of the range cameras - some photos just can't be taken with the gear you have. It's always a pain and I sometimes think more than half of photography is learning what is and isn't possible and how to work around that!
