Another WTF of vintage photography - portraits of the deceased, arranged as they would have been when alive.
Second only to family portraits in a similar fashion. |

Second only to family portraits in a similar fashion. | I got a bit obsessed with Victorian death photography a while back, particularly ones where they stood them up using stands and painted their eyes on to make them look alive. So sad. This one is fairly creepy. |

| Re: blackandwtf One of the reasons death photography was so popular, was that photography was a rare luxury and photographing the dead afforded this luxury. People wanted to have a photo of what someone was like when they were alive, it's fair enough. No creepier or sad than interning someone in a wooden box, burying them in the ground, marking the spot with a slab and continuing to visit it.
Still though, Victorians are lol.

Still though, Victorians are lol. | I understand that, I just think it's an intriguing process. No doubt the practise of burying people will go out of fashion and people in future will find it a fascinating way to treat the dead.
I think it is sad that photography at the time was so out of reach financially for most people, that the only way they could memorialise their loved ones was to stick pins in them, paint on their eyes and prop them up for a photograph. The Victorians did, however, have a much different view of death to what we have today, and were much more comfortable around it so perhaps it was more natural to them.
The practise is alien to me so I find it a little creepy, but I certainly don't find it funny. |
