**Ivory Blacks : 19/02/08 - Abel Is Dying**

In all fairness, I went to this gig only ever hearing a couple of the bands names. However I was pleasantly surprised with the gig given that I hadn't heard the names of them all.

First on: The Condemned. Group of 5 lads reigning from East Kilbride. In all honestly when I saw these guys I thought, look good, probably sound shite. Man was I wrong!

As soon as they started they had me glued. The lead singer had strong vocals and unlike most hardcore bands he could sing and scream. His screaming seemed effortless, like a walk in the park. Considering these guys had they’re first gig in Oct 2007, they seemed confident and strong through they’re whole set.

Next: Blessed Apostle. Another group of 5 lads from East Kilbride/Dumbarton.. Before these guys even went on stage, you could sense the lead singers arrogance. In general the instrumentals are the strongest thing for this band. The lead singer looked like he struggled to keep up with the rest of the band. He doesn’t seem to take anything seriously whilst performing, with unfunny comments between songs or mumbling rubbish. I soon switched off. They caught my attention again when they played some new stuff when they sounded strong and worked well together.
I’ve seen these guys a few times and they’re a great bunch of guys that could do better! However, I saw a massive improvement from their last gig, so hopefully these guys will get better.

Rise With The Falls up next. Honestly, I have never heard or seen these guys before. They don’t look like your typical hardcore scenesters, so I was intrigued from the second they started setting up.

They started strong, and his performance seemed effortless. Their sound was very Killswitch-esqe, with strong breakdowns. Again the lead singer could sing and scream which was impressive. Good band. Sounded good, looked good, they came on, played their set then left it to the other bands.

Bleed From Within, I have heard of this band but until tonight I hadn’t actually heard them. These guys have a huge following in the underground scene and after tonight's show I can understand why! I looked at the lead singer and thought "is he old enough to even be here without his parents?". Oh my god though, can this wee guy scream and can he work a crowd? The answers being yes and yes.

The guitar solos were strong, all the guys fused together well. The breakdowns were amazing these guys were real crowd pleasers. These guys have the potential to be huge.

So people if you get the chance go see these guys.

Abel Is Dying. The venue emptied as soon as Bleed From Within finished their set. However, those of us that stayed to see them were far from disappointed. With 6 members in the band I kept thinking,"how are these guys all gonna fit on stage?" But they did and put on a amazing performance. I’d never heard this band before, but they soon had my attention when 1 of the lead singers jumped on top of the PA system to kid on he was swimming. With 2 vocalists in the band I thought at least one of them would be shite, but no. Both vocalists were strong throughout. It didn’t help that they kept dropping/standing or throwing their mics away. Really energetic performance from these guys.

All in all a really good gig.

It's "Rise With The Fallen", and like every other band on this bill they are not hardcore. As for "looking like typical scenesters"...

I think it's safe to assume he wasn't but also that he's heard all the bands in question and also the genre known as hardcore, and thus can see they are not linked.

The picture speaks for itself on his second point, unless that's a dated photo and they are now long-haired, dungaree-wearing Dexy's Midnight Runners look-a-likes or something.

I'll guess thats a more recent picture and the myspace says Metal / Hardcore wither their description of their music is right or wrong though is anyones guess. I've given up caring what hardcore mean to mean after all half the time it's techno

My point exactly if he wasn't at that particular gig...how can he comment on what they looked like at that gig???

I Think Joe's being a bit tongue in cheek and actually does know about Hardcore course why you would know if he does or doesn't is anyones idea.

Is that your or my top 5, and is it Glasgow/uk/worldwide hardcore bands?
For example on the glasgow scene, Man must Die, some folk would class them as hardcore whereas i'd class them as thrash/death metal.
However i'd say by my hands, are a great hardcore band in the glasgow scene??

In the end everything is subjective, as the genres crossover so much now!
