Re: QMU Entry Policy

As far as I am aware, yes, again this year, it will be Freshers' of Glasgow University Only.

This is decided by the Cross Campus Freshers' Week Committees.

I agree with what you've said in principal Toast, but at which point do you start letting in non-Freshers' Pass holders? There were around 3000 Freshers' Passes sold last year ... and until the night is underway, we have no idea how many bodies we can expect through the door. What happens if we let in non-freshers' pass holders at say, midnight, and then some Freshers', who have paid for their pass, turn up, and we're at capacity?

I get that we could have, e.g. a midnight curfew in place for Freshers' Pass holders, but it's still a bit of a logistical nightmare.

Re: QMU Entry Policy

there is that problem in theory; in practice it hasn't been too problematic in the past - with the combined capacities of the unions being usually about the same as or greater than the number of passes sold, and since (especially in recent years) surprisingly many pass holders do silly things like going into town during the week, we've never reached a point where we'd have had to turn anyone away.

it just seems like a needless piece of beurocracy for the cross-campus committee to decide that in advance, then stick to it on a needless point of priciple on the night if there is room to let non-freshers in - we've literally had situations where there's maybe 600 people in the QM after midnight and we're turning away second year GU students (to go spend their money in the garage instead). yes, absolutely, making a decision that ensures freshers can get in is good, sticking to the letter of it even though the spirit has become irrelevant if it turns out on the night that we do have plenty of room just costs us money and goodwill
