Space Is A Big Empty Place, Right?

Hmmm...

According to Gizmodo:

Quote:
The European Space Agency has just released images showing all the satellites and human-made debris now orbiting space as a result of 51 years of launching stuff since Sputnik. That's about 6,000 satellites up there—of which only 800 remain operational—plus thousands of other objects from launches and accidents. According to their mindblowing simulations things are getting a lot worse:

About 50 percent of all trackable objects are due to in-orbit explosion events (about 200) or collision events (less than 10).
Yes, we knew that there was a lot of crap out there, but not to this extent. According to the ESA, this is really bad news and urgent measures are needed. Explosions in space are not disastrous on their own, but because of the aftermath.

Re: Space Is A Big Empty Place, Right?

We need space binmen.

But yeah that is a pretty bad problem, considering 51 years ago space was empty

Re: Space Is A Big Empty Place, Right?

What is it with humans and throwing there shit everywhere. We need a gient space hover or something.

There's an anime called planetes that deals with this very senario well worth a watch.

And with the European Space Agency having taken that picture, they too are contributing to it.

Think of it as providing shade from all of this global warming causing sunlight.

Re: Space Is A Big Empty Place, Right?

Isn't catching the junk a problem?

I think a truly terrifying way to go would be having a dead monkey's skull tearing through your spacecraft's windshield before all that nasty vacuum got to you... :/

Belter, lets destroy the Earth and fill space with junk.

The human race, what a quality bunch.

If you shot a jobby into space, how long do think it would last?

It would freeze pretty quickly...?

Frozen space turds... actually fuck the monkey skull, more horrifying way to die right there.

Dunno, but the ISS load all their waste into the supply ships then let them burn up in the atmosphere.
Except for the piss. That's 'recycled'.

Should last forever, providing it doesn't collide with anything.
