| Re: Is God evil? From a less than agnostic point of view:
The point has been touched on by a few, but i think the initial thing to consider is does god really exist? And what is god? An omniscient/omnipotent man in the sky? Or the balance between good and bad karma... ying and yang... etc etc!
To begin with, I think that "bad" may be an over generalisation. For example, who or what is purely good or completely unselfish? And when does this degree of "bad" or self interest make somebody a bad person? What lines must be crossed?
But to stop being overly and annoyingly philisophical...
(for multicultural purposes I'll refer to God as "Dave")
As religious people will tell you, the tests/trials/pain Dave inflicts on us are purely to test our faith. And since some will lose faith in Dave from say... the loss of a dear family member, then this would seem apt.
Personally however, I would categorise this as a "line crosser" and therefore bad. I'll justify this by saying that if Dave is omniscient, then surely he would know those who would remain faithful through and through, without any need to cause his/her/its "creations/children" immense pain.
To look at it from another way (and ensure this is a balanced arguement)... if it were to be agreed that "Dave" was "bad," I think (controversially) people who have disasters/tragedies in their lives may use Dave as somebody to blame. However, is it not true that Dave bestowed free will opon us? And therefore we go through life making our own choices. We choose which roads we cross, which pills to pop, which people we leave our children with. Newton said, for every action there is an (equal and opposite) reaction. If the reaction happens to be some sort of disaster, is it not then true that (by the basis of free will) it is still our fault (therefore clearing Dave of any wrong doing)?
To finalise, I would say that it is easier to point at Dave and say... you had the power to stop/not do that, and you didn't.
In any case i think this was a very interesting question, and think the standard of peoples responses shows there are some truely interesting people out there...
