What about Lost being pretentious seems negative to you? | No, nothing - not what I meant. I meant the attribute of being pretentious to me is a negative one.
Pure are a forum daddy but.

Took the cunt three fucking years to realise.

Pure are a forum daddy but. | It isn't always, for a lot of popular entertainment merely having the superficial appearance of having deep and profound meaning is sufficient to lend the rest of the soap opera fluff a little dignity. Its hardly Shakespeare, and any improvement is an improvement.
See also: The comics of Grant Morrison, the lyrics of Tool and the movies of Guillermo Del Toro. All of which I love.
You can see it as negative thing in all cases if you really want to, but it kind of flies in the face of logic. |

I guess I just always associate being pretentious with, you know, pretending to be something it's not (e.g. deep and profound), which of itself is entirely subjective anyway - because how do you draw the line between entertainment that does have meaning and entertainment that pretends to have meaning?

The story runs on constant, and mostly empty intrigue. So, from a superficial perspective its briefly like watching the most intricate and multi-levelelled mystery ever concocted. However, as its elements are only explained retroactively and the more nonsensical mysteries are quietly post-rationalised or ignored, there is no pay-off. Its just disposable entertainment, junk food for the brain.
It would take the greatest writers in the history of humanity to make sense of the sheer weight of incoherency generated by this show.
Nothing particularly wrong with that mind, if you enjoy the ride. |
