Not actively training at the momment (but mean to get back into it) but studied Aikido for 7 years and did Muay Thai for about a year aswell, enjoyed both.

Re: Martial Arts

I really want to do something like Karate or Judo, but I really don't know if many classes would be prepared to take me on as a beginner while I'm pregnant.

Re: Martial Arts

Might take you on for fitness and technique but I doubt any of them would let you spar

niobe: wow, i'd be more surprised that you'd want to!

yeah, i've only heard bad things about krauseworld.

i did thai for a bit but the guy (six times world champion heavyweight thai boxer duncan airlie james) taught grappling too, that's what really interests me. works well and nobody gets quite as mashed up.

basics will always be similar, you gottta have good punches and kicks, knees and elbows are pretty handy things, and a few takedowns and armbars will be mighty useful if you don't want to have an extended scrap.

one main difference between karate and thai is the "chamber" that karate uses as a halfway step during techniques, thai guys'll tell you it just slows things down, and that's possibly true, but while it's fashionable in some circles to put down karate, i know some karate practitioners that are VERY hard guys.

to be honest though most of the benefit from any martial arts class is probably the fitness and confidence you'll get; they're with you ALL the time, whereas the ability to win a fight will hopefully never be relevant

To be honest at the moment it would be more for the fitness aspect than the self defence - I'm a trampolining coach and normally get loads of exercise through that, but I'm not insured to be on the trampoline while pregnant, so can't coach, so can't keep fit that way.

Bleh.

It's about the individual rather than art, of course, but a total reliance on heritage and tradition without adopting modern training ideas will leave you open to attack from critics.

On Krauseworld I have heard that Steve Krause is good with the stick.

Re: Martial Arts

I'm surprised at all the bad vibes about Krause - i've been going for a year, and i've never found them to be anything other than helpful, supportive, and very good technique wise. Over the years I've done Karate, TKD and Judo- did TKD for many years, and I like the applied nature of jeet Kun Do much more than the stylised TKD. Thai KB is *hardcore*, and brilliant for fitness. I'd definitely advocate doing a combination of different arts, because they've all got different strong points and weak points - knowing more of them means you can apply whatever you need to any given situation - if you're doing it from a self defense point of view.

I miss the tournaments in TKD though.

Re: Martial Arts

Aah, ok, with you. Yeah, it is fairly money centric, but only slightly more so than the other clubs i've been a part of. In fact, i'd say them running it like a business is probably a bit better, rather than having to fundraise for new pads, like my last TKD club... but aye... different experiences and all that.

Re: Martial Arts

I'm going to start Muay Thai classes when I get more settled in uni - I just want to go for the experience and the fitness aspect of it, though.

Re: Martial Arts

Been training mixed martial arts for just over a year now. Love it and i have seen my skill improve greatly the last few months as i started training at two gyms with different people and trainers.

Great class for cardio has pushed me to breaking point a few times. The classes helped me lose a load of weight along with going to the gym.

Also gonna start BJJ classes soon to try and improve my ground skill.
