Caley wireless network?

Has the wireless network within the uni been made available to students yet? Last time I was at uni, the Learning Cafe had wireless installed but unavailable and I know the library has moved to the new learning centre now.

Just want to know if it's worth my while buying a laptop to study

It is availiable to students, but only afaik in the saltire centre. plus anytime ive tried to use it i can find it, get connected but get nothing after that( although it is supposidly fixed).
Plus you can hire laptops in the uni and you get it for 24 hours

Re: Caley wireless network?

I need a new computer cos my sister's taking my desktop so I don't really mind forking out for a laptop as long as it means I can get work done while I'm in between classes.

PC World are doing budget Lappies from £300...

Or for around £400 you'll get a decent wee machine from Dell as long as you dont want anything fancy.

£600 will get you one of the now superceeded Apple iBooks, still with the full warranty..

Buy a MacBook + iPod through the education store and you'll get £100 off the iPod. Sell the iPod and you'll effectively get a MacBook for about £550.

I'm embarrassingly clueless when it comes to macs. I like the look and style of them but other than that I'm totally useless at navigating the OS and interface

I bring my laptop in sometimes into the saltire and you dont have to login or anything. I dont know if you can use it elsehwere on campus now though, I aint tried. Lemme know if u can. I sometimes prefer to work in empry ooms cause that Saltire is SHIT for trying to concentrate. i love the old library lol

Re: Caley wireless network?

if its your own laptop you will get access to the "guest" network which just gives you internet access, if you stay in caley court or borrow a a university laptop from the base then you will get full access to the caledonian domain via the gcu corporate network.
you dont get allowed on the domain with your own machines because the integrity of the network cant be guarenteed and that they cant be sure you wont infect the network with a virus from your machine from home

Re: Caley wireless network?

I reckon someone should do a post-grad research project on securing the network to allow outside hardware to be used on the network.

Hmm, and here I was thinking I wouldn't go back....
