| Re: So you didn't get the results you wanted? The schools don't give you the proper details about after school, its dissapointing. The teachers decide who they want to push towards uni and thats what they do, they don't let anyone else know about apprenticeships, college courses and other ways to get the career you like.
And employers now complain that a degree isn't enough because everyone is getting a degree now, Schools really need to take a better handle of the situation and start telling students about all avilable options, and the government need to fund it.
Where are all the trades people gonna be in a few years? There will be very little because everyone decided to study "social sciences" or "BSC in david beckham".

| Re: So you didn't get the results you wanted? I wish I'd left school at the end of 5th year and went to college instead of staying on for 6th year. What a waste of time, I didn't get any worthwhile qualifications and I could've been doing the first year of an HND. Instead I wasted 6th year, went to college, got an HNC then wasted about 6 months before getting a job.

| Re: So you didn't get the results you wanted? THE BEATLES lyrics - "Help!" www.OldieLyrics.com (Lennon/McCartney) Help, I need somebody Help, not just anybody Help, you know I need someone, help When I was younger (So much younger than) so much younger than today (I never needed) I never needed anybody's help in any way (Now) But now these days are gone (These days are gone), I'm not so self assured (I know I've found) Now I find I've changed my mind and opened up the doors Help me if you can, I'm feeling down And I do appreciate you being round Help me get my feet back on the ground Won't you please, please help me (Now) And now my life has changed in oh so many ways (My independence) My independence seems to vanish in the haze (But) But every now (Every now and then) and then I feel so insecure (I know that I) I know that I just need you like I've never done before Help me if you can, I'm feeling down And I do appreciate you being round Help me get my feet back on the ground Won't you please, please help me When I was younger so much younger than today I never needed anybody's help in any way (But) But now these daya are gone (These days are gone), I'm not so self assured (I know I've found) Now I find I've changed my mind and opened up the doors Help me if you can, I'm feeling down And I do appreciate you being round Help me, get my feet back on the ground Won't you please, please help me, help me, help me, ooh I got a conditional last year so I was meant to get 2 B's, but I got an Advanced A in the area of my uni subject and a C in a Higher.

I actually wasted 3 years - left school, arsed about - my brother made me go work beside him. Left there at 18, went back to college and worked in a pub. Ditched college and decided I wanted to travel, worked in BHS and the pub for 17 hours a day, 4 days a week. Went to Thailand, came back and fucked about some more and finally got a decent job at 21 which I'm still in.
A lack of degree hasn't hindered me at all although it might if I go for a job outside of 3, I'll cross that bridge later though. |

| Re: So you didn't get the results you wanted? I did 6th year, and got a whole load of highers that i crashed for a laugh so that wasn't a waste.
I do feel as though I fell into the whole "go to Uni..QUICK" trap though, looking back I'd rather have waited and found a degree that i really wanted to do and got some life experience in the meantime. I graduated not being very worldly-wise in some areas and although i stuck out my degree, I wouldn't do it again if I had the choice.
So essentially I'm back to where I was when I was 18 |

| Re: So you didn't get the results you wanted? see i wasn't pushed towards uni. i was given many options of MA's, college, training courses etc. it was my mum that did most of the uni pushing but im better off than i would have been if i went to uni. My wee bro also went down the route of an MA the same as i did

| Re: So you didn't get the results you wanted? not finacially to begin with, when you study an MA you don't get payed an awful lot as your employers pay your tutor and exam fees. But as for my career path it was the best thing i ever did. I wouldn't be an instructor today if i hadn't done my equine MA

| Re: So you didn't get the results you wanted? I left school at 16 with 5 standard grades. My school never pushed it's pupils apart from the rich 1's with expensive post codes. I wasted a year in college before getting a crappy job for 2 years. I was then gladly paid off and then managed to get a decent job which could have lead to a great career. But as always my work was moving to Mexico and I was paid off...again
Ended up working for Optical Depressed for 3 years before running! Into college to do Health Care then onto Uni to do Nursing. Starting 2nd year soon and I wish i'd have chosen a different career path now. I now want to do Sports Therapy. Nursing is Bollocks! Man have I made some shitty choices in my life!
But as Bruce Wayne father said " Why do we fall Bruce? So we can learn to pick ourselves back up again"

So whats everyones plans/past experiences? | I wish I'd done more of a vocational course rather than something so academic. Or just joined a commune and had 6 kids

| Re: So you didn't get the results you wanted? I'm also in the camp where my school more or less said 'got highers? go to uni'. It's worked out nicely for me, I've done a relevant degree and I've got an excellent job offer waiting for me, but from looking around at my friends and family that seems to be a bit rare these days. My advice to anyone leaving high school is to not just apply for a degree in something that sounds interesting/you liked in high school. You might have a few fun years, but you may well be wasting your time and racking up debt along the way. Unless you want a specific career which requires a specific degree don't go to uni, despite what the Government might have to say about that.
