| Re: NUS disaffiliation referendum?.... Campus was covered in posters, there were folks flyering all over, and the NUS ran lecture hits. Strathclyde computers would have flagged it, the Union had publicity all over it, they paid staff to publicise the election, and it was in Pegasus announcements. It's also based on a call made by the Union at AGM [or rather SRC after AGM failed to be quorate] in 2001 [and 2002,2003,2005, and late 2006 (though that one was actually quorate, as I pointed out in another post)].
Admittedly, if you set foot in the Union as often as the average Strathclyde Student and aren't on campus on Mondays there's next to no way you would know. Why not complain to the Union's Democratic Services Manager?
As for the dates of the election, it allowed results to be announced at the most recent SRC (which was today, from quarter to six), and also at NUS Conference, which starts on Tuesday. At least, that's the best explanation I can come up with. Though given that neither side was happy with the question, nor the date of the election, nor the format of the voting, nor the rules of the campaign, I think the Union were doing something right. Add to that the fact that the Union was not behind the referendum, and only one member of the Executive (or Exec. elect) was campaigning it is perhaps not surprising that turnout was so low. Even the Union elections usually manage about twice that.
I'm trying very hard not to be disappointed, and even harder not to be angry. I will instead assist students at Strathclyde by MURDERING THEM AND ADDING THEM TO MY UNHOLY LEGION OF NECROMANTIC ATTENDANTS joining their SRC. |
