| The Saltire Centre I think I actually hate this place. I've been in since just before 10am this morning trying to write a report that I need to hand in at 3pm. I decided to go to the 3rd floor because it's the quiet study zone and I've already had to move twice because of the noise folk around me are making. I've migrated out onto the balcony bit where the beanbags are and the actual noisiest person in the world (and coming from me, that's fairly spectacular) has sat beside me and spent the last half an hour moaning about her ex boyfriend (lucky escape, mate), eating the contents of her bag including some particularly honking coleslaw-infested sandwiches and cheese and onion crisps and now she's throwing her beanbag around to get comfy. She's actually sitting so close to me that I'm tempted to remind her what personal space is.
How the hell is this a learning environment? This uni is actually full of bangers. |

| Re: The Saltire Centre Its shit when you're trying to do work and folk are sitting on myspace and the like. my friend who's our class rep brought up the idea of bannin access to such sites in the saltire centre, i think this would make a difference. The labs in other buildings could be used for that kinda thing. |

| Re: The Saltire Centre Hmm. See I maybe have a cheek cos I have the forum up but I am actually ploughing through my work as well, but I'm doing it on my own computer. The Saltire was supposed to make such a huge difference to the student learning environment and I actually don't think I'll have this report done in time now. |

| Re: The Saltire Centre That drives me mad, cos you know I spent the whole summer working there and having mo problem just grabbing a computer it annoys me so much to see everyone on bebo/myspace/playing games and holding the computer up.
During semester time I don't even try for a computer in the Salty, I tend to go to a computer lab that not many folk know about. |

Ah uni, how I miss you. |

| Re: The Saltire Centre The Saltire is a joke when it comes to non-computer based study too. In the old CLIC there was acres of space full of quiet study areas, shelves of books which could be accessed 2/3 (or even more!) subjects at a time (compact shelving was such an inspired idea for a university library ) and more importantly the layout meant the sign on the door saying "quiet study area" was actually respected.
I get the impression the uni may have forgotten some people actually prefer using the library rather than, say, home, to study using books or notes, as I do. Level 4 is always heaving from 10am, and you've almost literally zero chance of getting a study booth in the whole building after that time because theres a couple of dozen, max. And as for anywhere else? Hardly. Level 3 might as well not be a quiet study area, based on people's attitude towards it, and everywhere else is group study already. At least the balance was fair in the CLIC, for all its faults.

| Re: The Saltire Centre I got handed out some sort of questionnaire last year asking for my views on the place, and my final comment was 'This is not a place of learning'.
Clearly my views haven't changed anything.

No idea what they've actually done this year, if I get round to it I'll look into it.

And have any of you mentioned any of this to the staff? I've been told off for being too loud in level 3 before discussing a project with a collegue at barely a whisper. one could also comment on leaving essays to the last minute
