Or there are people that need that last minute aurge of studying because that is how they deal with it.

Everyone studies differently. I for one cant study in a library. I need music and noone about to help me study. Others find the the saltire centre is the only place they can study effectively.

To assume that anyone that needs access on that day is lazy is far from the mark.

As for planning ahead, many people may have study plans months in advance which had them down to study in the saltire on this day only for them to be told now thatthey cant totally throwing off thier study plans.
well its only the 2 lower floors that are closed, most of the seating areas and pc's are on the 2 upper floors, the ground floor where the service will be held is probably the noisiest floor anyway and only has about 50 pc's and the 1st floor only has about a dozen machines to work on. there is also computer labs in every dept that will have software specific to their course and the work they are studying
you make it sound like there is a shortage of alternate places to go and work and that a few hours closure of the 2 floors with a few pc's is the end of the world
from wandering about the saltire centre all you lot ever do is play games on the pc's anyway or sit in messenger, bebo, myspace or any other website or message board, anything other than actually study
there are loads of you now even getting caught out and getting your user accounts blocked because you bring your pals, girlfriends, boyfriends etc etc and let them use the uni pc's to play on stopping caley students getting on them so dont whinge about losing the use of a few pc's when all you ever do is abuse the use of them anyway

The service isn't being held at Caley, the reception is and you're right about the PCs and seating areas being upstairs which is mighty handy. Unfortunately you can't check out or in any books on any other level or collect journals or books which you have put a hold on unless you go to the Base which is helpfully closed for the day in the middle of the exam period.

Get a grip, the issue is with the University. Where would they have hosted this if the Saltire hadn't been finished? Either the brand spanking new 'Students Association' North Hanover Street building which was supposed to be handed over three years ago, or the Brittania building which is a purpose built suite for business meetings, lectures and socialising. Instead they're closing a library.

you ever been in the brittania or north hanover street buildings, there isnt room to swing a cat in them, especially the brittania, its just all offices
the ground floor of the saltire is actually designed for holding exhibitions etc as well

As I said in my previous post, the North Hanover Street is a purpose built students association and has a larger capacity for social events than the Saltire. An exhibition is quite different to a wake.

Re: Saltire centre partial closure - 17th January

I emailed Michael Bochel (President of the Students association) and got a very quick response back:

Quote:
Yvonne

Thank you for your email. I am more than aware of the fact exams are going on at the moment and have voiced my concerns over the closing of the Saltire Centre as the Students’ Association is here to represent the best interests of the students. However there seemed to be a miscommunication on the university side as I stated that the Students’ Association did not back this move yet we were still included. We are 100% behind hosting a reception for Magnus on campus however our main priority is the students.

There will be a statement in the next All Student Email regarding this.

I hope this clears up the situation and I wish you all the best in your exams and hope this does not impact your exams. All I can do is recommend you have all your books (if your books are on the ground floor) before 11am on Wednesday and if you find the Saltire Centre too busy there are usually empty classrooms in both the George Moore and Hamish Wood to study in.

Again I do apologise for what seems to be the apparent backing of this move by the SA and this has been raised with the university.

Regards

Michael Bochel

Re: Saltire centre partial closure - 17th January

Everybody out of the water!!!! I mean Saltire Centre!!!!!

This is terrible, why close the Saltire Centre? If the ground floor of the Saltire was to be used for conferences and functions why have PCs, Books and The Base located on the ground floor.

I take it the staff will be moved from their offices in the first floor and that all the PCs removed from the Ground floor and then put back again - they'll be no PCs on the ground floor for 2 days!

Magnus was a viking, surely a traditional Viking funeral is the order of the day - sailing down the Clyde on a flaming Viking longship

The only other Viking I know is Hagar the Horrible and he wouldn't like the Saltire, those flashing lights, compact storage, lack of access to books and poor print credits would rip his knitting.

Oh shut up. You clearly missed out the parts where they said "we do not back this" "we are taking this up with the university" "the students come first not the wake", and other such titbits.

That you are justifying this defies belief in all honesty. And incidentally Bobzilla is not a student - you cannot therefore suggest he is as you did in an earlier post.

Actually I finished my exams last week so was unaffected by this - but the idea that anybody should be affected by it appalls me (and I do know people who are - Vonnie to name but one).

The idea that anybody actually thinks it is acceptable to close the library for something like this appalls me more though it has to be said.

To the tune of The Hallelujah Chorus from The Messiah by George Frideric Handel:

You're a wanker,
You're a wanker,
You're a wanker,

You're a wanker,
You are a - wanker.

that goes to show how intelectual you are then that you need to resort to personal insults,
Just to be clear, I didn't need to resort to personal insults, it just seemed appropriate. And I'm confident I'm more intellectual than you.

Well whaddya know: sometimes feeding trolls is fun after all.
