Saltire centre partial closure - 17th January

You couldn't make this up.

I'm sorry he's dead and I appreciate that he's been chancellor for the uni for a long time but closing off the lower floors of the Saltire for most of the day in the middle of the exam period for a private function is beyond a joke.

Here Caley students! This is what your uni thinks of you.

Re: Saltire centre partial closure - 17th January

I read this and had to laugh.

Only our uni would put promotion of the Saltire Centre ahead of their students doing exams. Cos lets face it. They could have held this anywhere else on campus, but they didnt. They chose to use the library.

And really, how many people are they expecting that they have to close 2 floors of the library.

What about students who have an exam that day or need a book for coursework, but cant get in before 11.3O. Is it seriously a case of "ach well they should have had it earlier, screw them...?"

Im just quite lucky that Im done for this semester... Id hate to be sitting a final and be told that I cant have access to my own library.

Aye - the special building that only the special people get to use and the students are not trusted with? It would have been a damn sight less impressive than closing the whole library off for students though. They've actually had the gall to close the access ramp for this, and students will have to use the fire exits to get into the upper levels of the Saltire.

So basically the phallic imagery of the Saltire Centre column is now being used to screw students. Huzzah for idiots!

Seriously, whenever I think I'm getting nostalgic for the good old days of uni I read one of these threads and it all evaporates.

P.S. R.I.P Magnus - that man bonked your head like a pro.

Re: Saltire centre partial closure - 17th January

I heard about this and thought "are they fucking insane?".

I know Caley has done some stupid things before but this takes the fucking cake.

"Dear dear, our chancellor has died. Let us hold a memorial service for him, with lots of VIPs, all the x-s"
"But where should we hold it? I suggest the Britannia building"
"But that's been there for years! Our new £20 million computer storage facility library needs promoting - let's hold it there!"
"But it's the exams - don't students need the library for studying? That is what it exists for after all"
"So? They haven't studied up to this point they can go fuck themselves. Our prestige comes first after all, not the students!"
"Ah, good point. Saltire it is"

My vision of what the decision making process may have looked like for this.

Re: Saltire centre partial closure - 17th January

No but alot of people require as much time as possible. Not everyone can study all thier work a month in adance and remember it all. Not everyone is able to have their work up to date without realising they need further information for an exam on the the friday for example and not having the information until the thursday is no use like as you say leaving it to the last minute is stupid. Or there are people that need that last minute aurge of studying because that is how they deal with it.

Everyone studies differently. I for one cant study in a library. I need music and noone about to help me study. Others find the the saltire centre is the only place they can study effectively.

To assume that anyone that needs access on that day is lazy is far from the mark.

As for planning ahead, many people may have study plans months in advance which had them down to study in the saltire on this day only for them to be told now thatthey cant totally throwing off thier study plans.

Luckily for you, you didn't seem to require a qualification in written English to gain your degree.
