lost thesis

3 1/2 months after submitting and I've no viva date..so I contact the medical faculty administrator who advises me to contact the Convener, who advises me that she hasn't received my thesis. The external and internal examiners also haven't received a copy (only 3 are required for submission)...

..so, lost?

I take it you still have a copy (hard or soft)?
How the fuck did they manage to lose three theses? No matter how concise a PhD thesis is it's still going to be quite a physically substantial piece of work.

I've got it on hard drive and usb stick..got a dodgy soft bound copy for myself. This is the 3 soft bound faculty submitted copies they seem to have mislaid. Took me ages to print the buggar out, with nice paper, colour, photo paper, etc. They've not contacted me yet with a way of dealing with it, but they can pay to have it printed out somewhere..the printing was really stressful.

Could this affect any deadlines you may have had to hit?

I don't know really. I submitted within the 4yrs so I was on time and I should receive a viva examination within 3 months of submission. Maybe I'll just be given it anyway without all that further examination nonsense

It's quite depressing actually. I can understand losing a piece of paper, but not 3 bound copies of over 300 or so pages.

Not the same I know, but I submitted a piece of coursework earlier in year only to be asked by my project supervisor why I hadn't handed it in. I looked blankly and said "Ehh, I did". So I just re-printed it and handed it to her in person. We put coursework into a big box-file thing and turned-out it was found marked inside someone elses.

I'll survive..typical university admin balls up. Still, we'll see who gets the blame and if it turns up at any point. I won't get a viva date now until after 9th Feb (special examination board meet), which is crap.

Sorry to hear that

The number of times I've heard about admin balls ups (particularly re post grad theses) in the last little while is getting ridiculous. I know of two other people whose vivas have been postponed as a result of someone losing their work.

Hope you get it sorted though... you should suggest that they send whoever fucked up to print it out and get it bound for you as a form of compensation.
