At a basic level people's lived experience of crime obviously has a direct correlation to media reporting of crime - if not, why would they be reporting it?
Beyond that I'm lost. I'm presuming you got more background than that basic question. I'm hoping the question's set in a context not mentioned in your post otherwise I'm obviously in deep, deep trouble.
