What did you need to get direct entry to 3rd year?

It doesn't really say much for the standard of the course at Cali.

Whatever happened to getting a degree in Computing Science and then specialising though? Does sound a bit bad that you're straight in to third year of a degree course - at least a HND and phone call is better than the old Caledonian method of accepting cornflakes tokens.

I had contemplated the traditional route with Computer Science and then finding my niche but i decided to give this a try, it's 2 years and if i want to do something else afterwards then i have a degree behind me to support me.

Still, should be a riot.

Let me guess, Glasgow or Strathclyde boy?

I have had it up to my back teeth with this nonsense. I graduated Caley in 2006, BSc(Hons) Computing with specialism and I am damned proud of it. You should be judging Caley on the students it produces, not the students it accepts.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to share my pain with my fellow buckfast drinking Caley students. [/sarcasm]

My point was that giving direct entry to third year for someone with a HND is a pretty low standard. Since when did a HND equate to 2 years of a uni course?

I believe it's the norm, but regardless it really doesn't matter so long as i can cope with the course. Besides i've studied for 2 years at college on the chosen subject - if i had entered year 2 i'd be practically resitting my last year of college as the course contents are almost parallel.

Will be an interesting course, as dynamic internet programming is the field i hope to specialise in.

Since always? I just completed an HND course and it was common knowledge among everyone that it would count towards the first two years of your degree.

I'm going to Caley in September, straight into third year to do Multimedia technology but I was also accepted into a similar course at Strathclyde. You have to be honest about things, Caley is an easier Uni to access but at the same time there's no need to go around making sweeping comments about how "It doesn't really say much for the standard of the course at Cali" when to be honest, you don't seem to have any substance to back up your generalisation with.

On another note, I was at Glasgow going Psychology for two years. My results were always top notch but it was what i felt to be the generic degree and I wanted to do something that counted for more than just a degree which is why I'm doing what i'm doing. Cale provides courses that the other main Universities in Glasgow do not, so I don't think it matters where you study when you don't have a choice in the matter.

The standard of graduates that I've seen come from Caley's computing department is not very impressive. I've had the misfortune of interviewing several who have achieved a 1st or 2.1 and have been complete muppets. It has now led to all applications from Caley being stuck in the bin pile straight away. So along with low entry requirements for third year, which in my view doesn't reflect well on the 1st 2 years of the course, I'd say thats more than enough substance.

That's just lovely, i suppose you never take into consideration the student themselves. When it comes to Internet Software Development, doesn't the portfolio and the experience count for more than the degree anyway, or where they studied?

Being able to achieve a degree in this subject does not guarantee you'll be able to go straight into working the the respective sphere - no matter where you studied. You need to be able to prove you can do it proffessionally, something you can't learn at University.
