Second Degree

I've thought about this for a while and i'd quite like to do a second degree in Medicine Am I fucking nuts? I'm just pissed off the the job options available for Vets and the fact that you have to go where the work is rather than being placed somewhere you want to be (im sick of it down here and having recently been bought over im hating the changes and lack of payrise...im on a pittance down here)

Main Questions are - would I have to pay the fees? I know the fees for Vet Medicine as a second degree were something stupid like £15k a year but am I right in thinking they'd be less as Medicine is NHS funded?

THis is probably another one of my "I wish I could do that" ideas which will never come to frutition but hey. gives me something to investigate!

Re: Second Degree

Bottom of this page - it's a little over 3k a year.
Good luck! I'm not sure if they've split Scotland up into areas Instead of defining it like one big county yet so you don't end up getting placed miles away. I hear it easier for a vet to become a doctor than the other way around, so you're in a good position from that point!

Living in Scotland

Accelerated 4 year graduate entry programme

* You’ll have to pay the tuition fees yourself. These will be at least £3145 for each year of the course.
* For living costs you’ll be able to apply to SAAS for the:

Student loan for maintenance
Adult Dependant’s Grant
Lone Parents’ Grant
Additional Childcare Grant for Lone Parents
Travelling Expenses
Travelling Expenses (additional) for medical students
Disabled Students’ Allowance

Standard 5+ years medical degree

* You’ll have to pay the tuition fees yourself for the first four years if you study in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. Fees can vary considerably so you should check the amount with individual medical schools before you commit yourself to the course
* But, if you study in Scotland and you are not eligible to have your fees paid because of your previous study, you’ll only have to pay the standard £1255 fee to your University in 2008/09. You can apply to SAAS for the difference between the standard £1255 tuition fee and the higher tuition fee of £2825.
* For living costs you’ll be able to apply to SAAS for the:

Student loan for maintenance
Adult Dependant’s Grant
Lone Parents’ Grant
Additional Childcare Grant for Lone Parents
Travelling Expenses
Travelling Expenses (additional) for medical students
Disabled Students’ Allowance

Year 5

* You’ll be eligible to apply for a Scottish Government Health Department Bursary through SAAS.
* This support is the same as that received in year 5 by students doing medicine as a first degree.
* If you're taking a shortened version of the standard undergraduate degree you may be eligible for NHS funding from the fifth year of the course which could be your 4th or earlier year of study.

Re: Second Degree

I thought the same last year, and i am now in the process of applying for medicine to start next year. By the time i had mulled it over i had missed the ukcat tests for 08 entry. Its going to be a bit horrid getting used to being skinto all the time but im going to be so much happier overall and the avenues are countless post grad. fingers crossed it all works out for you!
