StudentsWhere the great thinkers and great unwashed congregate.
The Principal announced to staff in the Education Faculty last week a new development of the city centre campus which located the Students' Association in the Library building after the sale of the current Union building. This would be alongside departments from the Faculties of Education and Law, Arts and Social Sciences as well as student support services. Whilst significant investment was outlined in the proposal and the shifting of other services out of the Library Building is planned to free up space for the development this was a surprise to the Association who had no serious discussion with the University over this proposed new building this year.
Save YOUR Degree
Students at Strathclyde should be aware of significant changes made to the department of modern languages where by many effected students contacted the President upset, anxious and unsure about how this would affect the course of their degree. The Principal's new vision for Strathclyde is to become a Research led internationally renowned Technological University. Whilst the Association applauds his vision of Excellence we are concerned that good research does not always inform good teaching and learning. Furthermore a recently concluded review of the Social Sciences is set to recommend a merger of the Faculties of Education and Law, Arts and Social Sciences so as to deliver Social Science appropriate to being an internationally renowned technological University. It is likely as a result of such changes that the merger of Departments may result in the cutting of courses and classes. Students should have a say in the organisation of their degree.
Save YOUR Lecturers
Strathclyde University's current decision to cut posts through early retirement and voluntary severance pre dates the recent grant reduction from the Scottish Funding Council. The Association is concerned that fewer staff across all Departments Academic or otherwise will impact upon the quality of our members’ education, with the particular reference to the provision of teaching & learning. The University and Colleges Union are very concerned on behalf of their members on campus about the cuts and poor consultation of them by University Management on this and the University restructure detailed earlier. Whilst the Association accepts the far from favourable economic climate we are keen to see as few jobs as possible lost and the staff of this University properly consulted on the future of this University and their jobs.
Statement from the Association Executive is to follow.
Pretty shitty on all accounts IMO
