User: Signature Size

Note to all users:

New size limit:

100 pixels high by 500 wide
maximum filesize 100kb

The size for signatures was 500 wide x 150 high and 100kb in file size. If your current signature is larger than this, please can you reduce it. If your current signature just meets these restrictions, don't panic, you're not being asked to reduce it currently. If you change your signature in the near or distant future, we do ask that you follow the new guidelines for signature size, which is 500 wide x 100 high and 100kb file size, as a courtesy to AN staff and all AN users. Any changes to this will be posted here to keep users up to date with current AN guidelines on signature sizes.

200 characters, not including BBcode as far as I can remember.

I just got an error message there saying its 400 - "Your signature can not be longer than 400 characters including BBCode markup."

I checked it a few minutes ago and I'm sure it said 200. Obviously need to get my eyes checked.

I just got a message about mine which is fair enough.

Question is - why is the limit this specifically?

Is it a bandwidth thing, or a space thing?
Is it both?

Does the height only count for images, or is it images and text?
If it's bandwidth, then should it be judged on the size of the file and not really the dimensions unless they are wild?

P.S Get the mods to fix theirs before they start correcting the users. HO HO HO

It seems to be a little arbitrary - as Shannow pointed out in the sig nazi site discussions thread about sig sizes, there is no noticeable difference from 100 - 150px.

Bandwidth I understand (I'm actually on AN right now by the graces of my phone's internet connection) - but the sizes seem plucked from the ether.

With 1-3 lines of text in a post, it makes zero difference given the height of avatar+location+postcount+repimages+digg+post tools + messenger icons

You're not suggesting that location, postcount, repimages and messenger icons are banished to the profiles only, are you?

No, I'm not - I'm just agreeing with Marc that it's a set of bloody stupid and arbitrary numbers that make no good sense (asides from bandwidth)

The Location etc only really take up space when in Classic mode anyway.

I reckon join date, postcount and messenger icons could be banished to profile only and a case could be made for the rest.
