I won't disagree that some of the initial posts made weren't particularly welcoming but let's be honest - if you can't take a few digs the internet's not going to be a comfortable place for you. As I said earlier, there were also more than a few people who were friendly and went out of there way to try and persuade him not to base his opinion of the place on a couple of silly comments.
If Forbes has noticed a trend developing in the way new users are treated then fair enough, he's perfectly entitled to speak out and act about it but this particular case is a one off in my opinion. I very much doubt that the vast majority of new users would react so quickly to something so relatively inoffensive. | I know what you're getting at, but the sensitivity may also have come from not being exposed to this before. He didn't seem that used to much of the stuff we routinely hurl at each other at all, I know when I came to the forum I hadn't seen such a high level of casual abuse being slung about in other forums I'd previously been on but just bit my tongue until I got used to it and knew who was going to insult you regardless of who you are - some users, as we've seen, aren't willing to sit it out in this fashion and prefer just not to take it at all if they feel they're being personally attacked, whether their impression is mistaken or not. Chances are that, if he'd realised that he wasn't being singled out, he may not have responded in this fashion. I mean, he may have found it a bit more annoying as he didn't appear to have the thickest of skins, but he'd possibly also realise that people weren't ganging up and trying to hound him out either.
And if not, well, yeah. He'd die a MarkMono-induced death. |

| Re: Abuse Discussion It's pretty shit if the poor guy's been bullied into leaving, which is clearly what happened. People can say it was just a bit of banter all they like, but banter's two-sided and he clearly was offended by what was being said. He joined up and got continuously told he looked like a girl, despite explaining in his FIRST FUCKING POST that he was a guy, then got compared to Gary Glitter when he put up a picture of samurai armour he had made, one of the pishest, lamest attempts at an insult I've seen on here in a long time.
I'm getting a bit sick of some of the folk on here, I'll be honest, and there's times I hold back from posting things because I know some forumers will lambast me for it, and there's some threads I'll avoid altogether because of who's started them. The majority of folk on here are ok, and I've made some good friends and plenty of acquaintances from the place, but this element of the place is starting to get on my tits.

Yes I think the person over reacted a bit but I personally wouldn't bother coming back ontot a forum that treated me like we did in this first thread and I don't think most folk would. I've noticed more and more people come on for a few days as new members then never come back which didn't use to be the case, sure theres always a high drop out rate but it seems to be creaping up. People get shit thrown at them far to easily at times. I think it's time things were kept a bit more on topic in most threads and any people jsut trying to be wanks get nipped in the bud quickly.

| Re: Abuse Discussion pfft, half the guys on here have breasts.
where were the references to him having breasts? Didn't see any in his pic? Did see a post in which he said he was Autistic though (cannae mind where) which would explain why he didn't immediately grasp the 'hilarity' of some of the abuse going his way.

AT LEAST USE GRATUITOUS SMILIES. It may the Internet, but still. | The comment Ross made about his outfit resembling something Gary Glitter might wear did in fact come with a wee just to make sure it wasn't taken in the wrong way.
The dude said every forum he's been on he's left because of the abuse he gets. Maybe internet forums just aren't for him.

Cue drama.

The AN status quo continues..
Except this time Forbes got his peepee smacked by an ISP and it looks like he might have finally snapped.
Get some popcorn, this could be good.

| Re: Abuse Discussion This forum, if I am right, started as a Cathouse forum where presumably most people knew each other. Therefore abuse and banter at the expense of each other was probably rife and understood by pretty much everyone. However, the forum is no longer a Cathouse forum or even a Glasgow forum. It is like suggesting that the Bamboo and Classic Grand nights Forbes runs are only for forumers signed up to Alternative Nation which I understand is far from the truth (and forumers attending are in the minority of the club goers). What passes as banter for some is misunderstood by others and Glasgow humour is also something not always understood from people not living in the city. Is it so hard to comprehend that maybe some of the banter here might be taken as unpleasant?
Personally I would not want to offend someone by throwing "banter" at them which was taken the wrong way and I certainly wouldn't use the defence that they didn't understand my funnies as an excuse for offending. Sometimes people just need to be a little more open minded on here and not assume that all new users will immediately understand the group dynamics and humour of the place. It takes very little to be courteous and thoughtful.

It takes very little to be courteous and thoughtful. | Very good point. Something I failed to explain due to my complete lack of writing eloquence. A lot of you know each other in real life and from the beginning so know when banter is banter, e.g. Posh ripping into Syxx, Zippy into Westy etc. Things get murky with users that have never met you lot and are faced with a barrage of insults from a bunch of people that don't even know them. In the past I've felt affonted by this since absolutely none of you have ever met me, but I let it slip. This user obviously didn't get it nor have the inclination to let it slip.
And the whole "banter" defence is an age old excuse for bullying, like it or lump it.
