I thought it was interesting to see that Forbes proposed keeping more threads on-topic as a possible solution to this.

Don't see that solving anything, or even changing anything much, but like I say, it was interesting.

It's interesting how your all going on and on and on about this image when I've already said that wasn't the main problem.

As for keeping things on topic being a solution that would mean removing snide we remarks which had nothing to do with the topic, or just stuck in to wind someone up with no reason.

...and removing relevant and interesting posts just because you don't like someones tone.

Just providing the counterpoint, I don't think it would succesfully do either of these things. It might, if implemented in a heavy-handed enough fashion discourage a lot of users (New and old) from using the forum at all.

I think if we use a bit of common sense we can see where something is relevant and interesting and where it's not, if were in any serious doubt we er on the side of caution and fire of a pm to the poster.

It might do what you say and it might stop a lot of th grief and encourage more new users and if it puts off a few old user who are just here to wind people up I won't be too upset. Though I think the majority that do wind people up do it just because they get away with it.

This occurs to every time you say this, but shouldn't you at least be attempting not to err?

Obviously you don't want to make any mistake but that's like saying you didn't mean to burn the toast, there will be times when it happens.

Its just that erring on the side of caution seems to happen a little too often when the subject comes up.

Its the easy choice, but its not always the best one.

Then the Mods perhaps need to toughen up a bit on things. Either way there will be mistakes but then we do our best to minimise them.

You keep saying the reverse of what I'm saying and implying that it somehow isn't the opposite of what I'm saying.

It seems like you think that people are being let away with murder here, but you can look back on your own archives and see that people are far more civil and well-behaved on here than they were when I joined. The forum is evolving, I wouldn't worry about that.

You might perhaps like to consider the possibility that tighter restrictions on the forum are not always the answer to your own sense of disillusionment with it.
