| lip ring advice hi guys
sorry this is my first post (hoping this is in the right place)
im getting the side of my lip pierced in a few weeks time (scary stuff)
just need some general advice really, couldnt see another thread on side lip piercings.
i have a really small mouth -which is fine because im going to have a tiny ball on the outside.
but some idiot off my other forum told me it wouldnt suit me (probably just being nasty as always), anyone here got a tiny mouth and their lip done?
also, my mums a dentist, shes going to kill me anyway but im worried about receeding gums, as i said it will be at the side but also right on my lip line so im hoping it rests on my teeth rather than my gums.
also read somewhere that it increases mouth cancer if you smoke (i do) because of the hole and also slows down the healing process.
any advice would be so great.

I don't know about it increasing mouth cancer, but I have..er..a fairly small mouth and have three lip piercings, though I only wear the two side ones. I think it's all down to opinion, just 'cause some numpty on another forum said you wouldn't suit it doesn't mean you won't. Plus, if you like it, fuck what anyone else says.
Advice: DO NOT DRINK AFTER IT! Honestly. Don't. You won't be able to brush your teeth properly for a week 'cause the swelling will be horrible. I don't generally swell with piercings but I looked/felt ridiculous due to several post-piercing pints.
Get a bar rather than a ring, also. I foolishly got two rings which didn't help with the swelling, among other things.
Good luck!

ta | 1) do you really just want folk to tell you it's ok, you'll look brilliant? Do you care that much about what other people think? If you want the piercing then get it, if anyone wants to have a pop at you for it just ignore them or tell them to fuck off.
2)Gum receeding, loosing enamel on your teeth are some of the downsides to having oral piercings. It may happen alot or little, but you can pretty much bet on some kind of damage in the long term. Even if the damage is very light.
3)Dunno about the cancer thing tho.

| Re: lip ring advice You can get Arnica caplets at most chemists that will help with the swelling annol. Used them when I got my tongue done and they seemed t help a wee bit.

can you not get plastic backs instead of metal ones? my teeth are sensitive anyway, i can just imagine the grating, like someone scratching knives and forks against a plate...blaaaaah. Quote:

| Re: lip ring advice If it's grating against your teeth the bar is too big. You'll have a bigger one to start with incase your lip swells, but you should be able to go back and get it changed after a few weeks.

The drinking thing - it's upto you, i wouldn't reccomend going near it. Best thing to do is ask your piercer what they think.

hmm maybe ill stay clear of it then, ive always drank after tattooing because i have a habit of picking the scab. |

| Re: lip ring advice i've had my lower lip pierced for 12 years and my tongue for 10, I've not had any problems dentist-wise, one of them even asked my advice on a few piercing issues, but i do worry about my gums receeding as it's hereditary on my dad's side. Avoid rings like the plague (at first anyway), a friend used to wear one and chewed it in his sleep, leading to a massive gum infection and him having most of his teeth ripped outta his head!
Labret bars seem to work fine for me, make sure you get one that fits (as pointed out above). I had one that was actually too small but didnt realise at first and ended up wakiing up one day with the damn thing imbedded in my lip, not good! I'm pretty sure you can now get non-metal labret bars (ptfe etc) but not sure if you can get these in brand new piercings, check with your piercer.
I'm sure with a dentist for a mum you'll already have good oral hygine, keep that up and you should be fine
oh yeah, and as you smoke you may end up totally soaking the filters after cos you will dribble more!

| Re: lip ring advice I think checking your piercer out first is your best bet really!
Kinda skimmed this so not sure if you already have piercings. Got my bottom lip done, and it was a long bar as it swells, and then after 2 weeks a shorted bar - i also want a ring but waiting for it to totally heal before playing about with it!
And who's Amanda Palmer?

| Re: lip ring advice Yeh - do that! You need to let it heal for the first couple of weeks with a plain, longer bar to account for swelling, and then take the piercer's advice on what to do next!
