| Question about lip piercing...anyone? Hi,
Really want to get my bottom lip pierced but just need some advice, I can't decide between a stud or a ring, but i've read that you can only have one or the other, as if you have a ring its higher up and if you have a stud you'd have a labret which is too low to wear a ring.
Has anyone got a bottom lip piercing actually on the lip who wears a stud and a ring?
Also do they damage your teeth?
any advice much appreciated cheers

| Re: Question about lip piercing...anyone? i've had a pierced lower lip for 14 years now, have worn both rings and labrets (usually the latter these days). Mine is quite low down but i do have rather small thin lips and a wee face!
As for damaging your teeth i think it depends on your general dental hygine, fit of jewellery and variou other factors. My lower front gums are receding but this is hereditary in my family, i've not chipped or scratched my teeth with either my lip or tongue jewellery (though i have swallowed them occasionally!)
As usual i think the best advice is to nip along to a good piercer and discuss your options

| Re: Question about lip piercing...anyone? Get a stud first, then swap to a ring in a few weeks (that's what I did)
The only problem i ever had with mine was the day after getting it done i was eating corn on the cob and bit down ob the back of the stud causing me to scram like a girl, but i still of course had in the extra large bar to account for swelling (which i never actually had any of).
But other than that, no tooth damage, mine doesn't even rub against my teeth unless im deliberately clicking it. |

| Re: Question about lip piercing...anyone? Yeah I got mine pierced and switched between rings and labrets too.
They can damage your teeth tho. My friend had problems with hers hitting her teeth... (she may come and explain), but I know of other people who have chipped their teeth with them and stuff, although i never had any problems personally.

One of my front lower teeth died, which was the most fucking excruciating thing I have ever experienced, and I was told by my dentist that it could have been due to the trauma of 5 years worth of lip piercing rubbing off my teeth.
There is no real way of telling if that was the cause though, it's possible the damage was caused by me smacking myself in the face with a guitar hero controller earlier in the week. Alas I shall never know.
Had three lip piercings in at this point and took all of them out and binned them while I was at the dentist. Let that be testiment to how horrible a dying tooth is!
I've got one vertical labret piercing in at the moment which is brilliant as it doesn't touch my teeth at all!

| Re: Question about lip piercing...anyone? I had a labret stud and loved it but ended up with receeding lower gums and my middle two bottom teeth got pushed slightly inward. Those two lower teeth are also slightly wobbly because of it and it's not fixable whereas the rest of my teeth are all fine. I would never have been able to fit a ring as mine was fairly low down. |

| Re: Question about lip piercing...anyone? I have had my lip pierced for 8 years, worn a stud for most of it, never had a problem with it. I must say though, that over the years I have seen my gumline at the front 4 bottom teeth lower slightly, just make sure the stud you buy isnt too long so it wont wiggle too much and therefore rub on your teeth.

| Re: Question about lip piercing...anyone? when i got my snakebites the guy suggested getting studs first (one first, the other the following week) as your lip can swell up so a stud will cause less irritation. putting a ring in straight away could have made it worse. no problems with mine at all though, gums and teeth are all ok.

| Re: Question about lip piercing...anyone? I had a lower labret in the centre of my lip done several years ago, which I had to take out (was on holiday, fiddled with it and lost the ball.. Weren't any piercing shops nearby).
Got that one done again (little bit higher), and later got two piercings on the sides (Spiderbites), took them all out but planning to get the centre one done again.
In my experience, no matter how low down your piercing is, you're bound to find jewellery that'd fit as a ring. Lip jewellery tend to be measured, in the UK atleast, in both the thickness (gauge) and the diameter. I can't count how many different bits of jewellery I've ordered online to find the proper sized diameter (as the closest piercing parlor is about an hour away, and I was far too lazy at the time).
For healing, I would recommend keeping a labret in at first, and change to a ring after it's healed. A few piercers' had mentioned that it's a bit too easy to get a ring 'pulled' on something, but I suppose that would depend on how well-kept it is (also the whole swelling thing bought up by Fiona B).
Hope this helped.
Edit: Almost forgot, if you're worried about piercings damaging your teeth, you could get one of these: http://www.bodyjewelleryshop.com/onl...mm_8920400.cfm
They reduce the impact on your teeth and gums, to prevent erosion. Feels a bit like wax when it rubs against your teeth, which'll take a while to get used to.
