Looks like we might be getting a little more clarity from the ISP's ..
Ofcom has today published a new voluntary code of practice aimed at rebuilding consumer trust in the ISP industry damaged by misleading speed claims.
The code doesn't cover marketing, so don't necessarily expect an end to the "UNLIMITED* SUPERFAST** 8MEG*** BROADBAND!!!" adverts that leave so many feeling cheated.
Instead, 32 fixed line ISPs, covering 90 per cent of the market, have agreed to provide clear caveats and accurate speed estimates at the point of sale and on their websites. Line checkers should always be used where possible before the customer can take up a broadband service, the code says, and a durable record of the estimated speed should be provided.
Regulators plan to monitor compliance with the voluntary rules via mystery shopping. Signatories to the code can therefore continue to advertise something they physically cannot provide, so long as their sales staff mention that fact when people ring up.

Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooft
1.17 Mbps action for azureus today, more than double what I've ever gotten before.
So I can reach the point where Virgin will throttle my connection quicker than ever!
*edit* and speedtest says

Yup, according to this page, the Renfrew region was upgraded today.
Woo.
The interval between birth and death is fractal. Any given moment is infinitely deep and rich, and therefore one lifetime is quite enough for me.
Fuck yeah.
I'm with sky and being driven absolutely nuts, sadly its not in my name. It was advertised at 8Mbps but of course when I called them they told me that the maximum my line could handle was 3 Mbps, thats fine, I can live with that but I'm lucky if I get over the speeds of a 512k. I've had broadband for years through many different ISPs and it hasn't been this slow in about 5-6 years.
Speedcore : It's the musical equivalent of holding your breath ; that is, if done for long enough, you will pass out.

I just signed up with O2 a couple of weeks ago, great service - £10 a month for 8mb connection (and it's actually 8mb, not something far below) can't be sniffed at.
I moved house to a place where the BT line had been out of use for too long. BT wanted 125 quid to reconnect, o2 want 50 quid to cancel - I'm skint so o2 had to go sadly
Aye, they're brilliant. I'm mourning the loss, Virgin are a complete pain in the ass.
