I've never used Vista or '98 so no, not really

... but yes, there are obvious differences, things like the resolution and bit depth of the colours in icons improving over time (apple certainly led the way there though, as pointed out earlier, OS X was launched eight years ago). And my favourite thing about being a Windows-hater is this:
their own logo rendered in a way that would look about right on a ZX Spectrum
I thought your point was more about what "Gadgets"
do rather than how they look - the idea of having commonly used little apps clumped in a handy place and available quickly, and Apple beat Vista by several years with that.
