Um... some icons (with pictures that represent what the application does)? Think they were around before Vista. Mac OS 7.1 had them in the early nineties, for example.

Except for the fact they're aliases (ali-ii?) or shortcuts in Windows-ese, is that so different from what's going on in this screenshot taken in 1999? And the functionality of the control strip is the same as the dock or the whatever-it's-called on the iPhone... What's new in the Vista example?

Yes, it gives it a completely more modern look.

If it looks the same, why would they bother investing so much money into changing it ? You can't see that for example XP looks different to vista? 98 looks different to Vista? Come on, they look completely different.

Edit: Also, i think you will find if you were to put those icons you just posted onto the current iphone to replace the current ones. Then it would look rubbish.

I've never used Vista or '98 so no, not really ... but yes, there are obvious differences, things like the resolution and bit depth of the colours in icons improving over time (apple certainly led the way there though, as pointed out earlier, OS X was launched eight years ago). And my favourite thing about being a Windows-hater is this: their own logo rendered in a way that would look about right on a ZX Spectrum

I thought your point was more about what "Gadgets" do rather than how they look - the idea of having commonly used little apps clumped in a handy place and available quickly, and Apple beat Vista by several years with that.
