Orange broadband not allowing email clients to access other servers?

So, I've got my parents orange broadband (because, well, its free).

Had email accounts set up from my own private servers, they worked fine (with pipex) until I installed the orange broadband. The outlook and thunderbird are objecting because they are expecting to connect to orangehome instead of my own servers; even though according to outlook and thunderbird, all the settings are correct and are pointing to my servers.

Any idea what the hell its changed and how I can reverse it?

Mail server is up and running fine, error message is trying to send with thunderbird.

Re: Orange broadband rage

Some ISPs use their own SMTP servers and block access to port 25 (standard SMTP port). Your email will still go out as your own domain and all that, but switch the SMTP (outbound email server) to their SMTP accounts.

You can also check with your e-mail host and see if they offer alternatives to port 25. Yahoo's POP mail services, for example, offer port 587 as an alternative to port 25. If you need help changing the port, let me know which email client you're using and I'll write up quick instructions.

Re: Orange broadband rage

Thanks
I did think that was the case as I was walking home, as I'd read somewhere that orange was blocking port 25. I was thrown by the error not being "cannot connect to server", as if its hijacking the dns request and returning the random error.

Mail server is my own host controlled via controlpanel, so I'm not even sure if I can create an alternative port.

What other options are there?

(Mainly hypotheticals so I can check them when I'm over again later)
just sending outgoing mail through them, but with return address being the non orange account?
would using the ip instead of the mail server address trick it into complying?
would using alternative dns help?

Re: Orange broadband rage

Change your outbound SMTP to orange, pretend I spoke a bunch of magical mojo to you, and you'll see that it all works out allright in the end. You won't be sending out as an orangebroadband.co.uk email address, you won't get spamblocked for no reason, you'll be fine.

Re: Orange broadband rage

I ended off doing that in the end, despite twitching about having to use orange services for anything, and being pissed of that thats the only available option.

Thanks

Re: Orange broadband rage

Your webhost very likely has a secondary SMTP port available. Yes, you CPanel to control everything, but they've likely got it set up anyways. Take a peek around their customer service/email faqs to see if they've got alternate SMTP ports
