DVDRW Turns Into 'CD Drive'

OK - here's my problem.

My DVD-RW ( D: ) drive has worked fine since I got my PC. However, now, when I insert a DVD disc to be burned the ( D: ) drive turns into CD Drive.

To begin with I had THREE drives. I managed to delete the two offending new drives by uninstalling Daemon Tools and MagicISO (two new programs I had downloaded yesterday which mount files to virtual drives).

So I was left with my original drive but now I have this problem! I use my burner at least twice a week and it's really bothering me. I tried disabling and reenabling the drive to no avail.

When I try burn a file in Alcohol 120% it states the correct name for my burner (_NEC DVD+-RW ND-3530A(1:0)). So it still states it as a DVDRW but when I look under 'Devices with removable storage' in 'My Computer' it says CD Drive and only reverts back to DVD-RW when I eject the blank DVD.

Haven't tried burning a CD as I have none to hand. But I doubt it would burn.

Someone tell me whats up and maybe even tell me how to fix it?

I'm dying over here and SO close to just giving up and buying an external DVDRW which I'd really rather not do!

xx Kirsty

Re: DVDRW Turns Into 'CD Drive'

just to be 100% sure this is an internal drive yeah?

also what OS are you using... correct me if im guessing wrong but xp?

Did this problem start to occur when you installed the tools you downloaded yesterday?

anyhow check the device manager check the drive is installed corectlly and showing as the correct drive

Dumb question have you tried more nthan one blank dvd (i know but its worth asking )

Also go to the drive in my computer right click it, select properties and check for a "recording tab" to check if windows recognises this as a recordable device

Try removing the drivers and reinstalling the latest drivers and firmware for the device

if this doesnt work you can try manually removing the registry entries for the drive instructions in the following link

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

in any case id guess this is an operating system going tits up problem so you could have a quick check in safe mode (press F8 when powering the system on) and see what happens also

if none of this works then well... lets hope something there works for now

hope this was of some use

worst case scenario you might have to just bite the bullet and reinstall (here's hoping not though)

Re: DVDRW Turns Into 'CD Drive'

Is this a new brand you're trying? I had a similar thing when I brought Tesco DVDs. Problem solved when I used a proper brand.

If you have XP, then you cal also fall back on system restore after the other stuff is exhausted. You would just need to restore the system to before the changes occured.

START > Accessories > System Tools > System restore

just incase you're not familiar with the feature

Re: DVDRW Turns Into 'CD Drive'

Yep, it's an internal drive, I'm running Windows XP Home (SP2) and I'm not sure if it started yesterday, I just tried to burn a DVD today and noticed the extra drives!

I looked up device manager....I have a question though! What is the difference between a 'disk drive' and a 'CD/DVD-ROM Drive'? But yeah everything is all looking good there.

I actually tried an actual DVD in my drive and it worked!!! But as for blank DVD's and writing, nothing. I'm using Sony DVD's and I tried another brand called Ridisk...still nothing.

There IS a recording tab there.

I haven't tried removing the drivers but I clicked update and it said there were no updates better than the drivers I had, though if someone can link me to a step by step guide how to do this properly and where to find the drivers I'd appreciate it.

Safe mode didn't work either and neither did the system restore >.<

PS - I'm using a DELL Dimension PC. PPS - Dell are the WORST company ever for dealing with any sort of problem as I found out about a month or so ago.

Re: DVDRW Turns Into 'CD Drive'

Your problem my be with Alcohol 120%. It seems to interact with hardware in a weird way and has been responsible for nearly killing a couple of my mates computers. Try using a different program to burn your DVD and see what happens.
