Phone line problem

Right,

I moved into a new flat and there was a phone connection. The line was disconnected (as in there was no account for address but the phone was plugged in) but when you picked up the phone you got a tone. Couldn't dial anything but you got a tone.

I called BT to get the line reconnected and get an account set up. All went through OK and I'm now being billed for it.

However now when I pick up the phone at home I get no dial tone and when I ring up my new number given to me by BT it rings but nothing comes through. I've tried a replacement handset and there is no change.

Any ideas what the fault is?

I doubt it's the wiring since it was working before but it's the only thing I can think of.

Re: Phone line problem

You know, I've had that same problem for about 3 weeks now. I've checked the wiring and changed phones about.
I phoned up about it and they're telling me that it's a £90 call out charge which is a joke that I can't afford right now.
It's strange that I can connect to the internet (although the connection isn't very secure).

Rubbish.

Sod the call out charge. They are providing a service that is not working to the correct specifications. Phone BT and tell them that you cannot use the service you are paying for and need an engineer to come and fix it.

absolutely spot on, get them also to test the line over the phone for you to see what the dealio is.

If they say £90, tell them you'll speak to ofcom, should make them think again.

Re: Phone line problem

I've logged a fault online but i don't hold much hope of any sort of useful response.

I think it might be down to an old account not being closed and there will be a problem with running two numbers/accounts down the one line.

Rubbish.

If they come out and its a fault caused by you, ie, you've cut the wire during decorating, or its your phone handset thats faulty, you need to pay, but if its someting caused by bt and it their fault, they're not meant to charge.

Re: Phone line problem

We've got someone coming round tomorrow.

The more I think about it the more I'm sure it's down to the old account on the line not being deactviated properly and it's a software rather than hardware issue.

Yeah, you're right. I didn't have time to moan about it when I last phoned and I'll need to go up to my mums and use her phone to get back to them about it. All they said was that they checked the line from their end and there's some sort of interference. Too be honest, it really can't be anything I've done. Last time I touched my phoneline was months ago to hook up my internet connection. This problem just seemed to appear from nowhere. I'm pretty sure it's something to do with them.

I'll need to give them a call during the week.
