| Re: ipod help For people used to organising their own filing system for music/videos/etc (using folders and filenames), the iTunes/iPod way of doing things takes a bit of getting used to.
It’s a different way of doing things, is all. Instead of choosing for yourself where and how to file stuff, it’s all done automagically based on ID3 tags. Get your tagging right and everything makes sense. If you can get your head around that working method, it’s a bloody elegant system.
Folk who aren’t techy at all seem to ‘get it’ a lot more readily, because they’ve never taught themselves to do it any other way. Also, making the switch can be a massive amount of effort if you have a big library of stuff already built up.

| Re: ipod help I can't fathom why of there's no ID3 tag it defaults to sorting by the track title rather than reading the full filename, which is where any useful info is likely to reside? |

| Re: ipod help Because it sees ID3 tags as having priority over filenames. If you have any tags at all, it’ll sort by those rather than using the filename. Only way to make it even notice the filename is to have no ID3 tags in there at all. The filename’s a last resort.

| Re: Shannow's ipod moan thread And it is true that iPods go wrong sometimes, but with 3/4 of the market share, yeah, you'll hear about that more often than with other players.
It definitely is true that if you trust iTunes to do the organisation of your files via tags within iTunes it works brilliantly, but otherwise it hardly works at all as an organisational tool... but I've never understood why people object to the idea of letting it do the work

If your fancy car broke down, would you take a spanner to it or let the mechanic who knows exactly what he's doing, fix it for free?

| Re: Shannow's ipod moan thread It is more than mildy bothersome that it wont just allow you to sort them by the filename if the ID3 is missing incomplete, but hey, I find winamp far handier in all aspects (not taking near 20 minutes t install and chewwing up half available resources for one).
Regardless, I only started this thread to fix someone elses ipod, just kind of surprised that what I would ahve though were some very basic options are mising.
Forbes and Al may now continue to pull each others pigtails |

Others, I suspect, are wary of leaving everything up to a machine in case it makes a bollocks of it. And others probably just find the whole approach patronising.
Linux is for control freaks who want absolute dominion over each and every aspect of running their machine. Apple seems to be geared towards the exact opposite. In theory Windows ought to be a comfortable middle ground, but too often it ends up with the worst of both worlds. Quote: |

Namely, something perfectly straightforward that you could easily fix yourself, only the car won't let you?
