Once again vista Fails To impress

iv always gave vista the beneifit of the doubt.
but today proved its a pain in the arse.
i was installing some new ram which went smoothly
half an hour after i had booted the pc back up windows
activiation pops up telling me i had to re activate windows within
3 days. Well i thought that was kinda strange.

so i enterd my product key and clicked next
but i got an error saying that the key was in use

so i looked at the other options for activation. and they were
all as bad as each other but i wasnt in hell paying 119 quid for another key when i have a legit version of the software.

so i phoned microsoft. only took them an hour and 3 diffrent members of staff to tell me to phone an automated line to get a new code.

apparently its the new saftey mech against piracy the comp rember you current hardware and once u change any of it, it treats it like its installed on another pc

so i thought id share this case it happens to anyone else.

just activate by phone !

I had that problem, although you've made it sound a lot worse than it actually is.

I just activated it by phone, took me roughly 5-10 minutes.

Same in fact one of the options on the activation screen tells you to use the automated line.

I giot this when my motherboard broke, had to get a new motherboard...still not activated windows on my laptop...i didnt get an option for an automated phone line despite that the people in pcworld tell me its there

I'm not having any problems with Vista, although i only switch it on once every couple of weeks to get updates then power it off. I'll get round to using it eventually once i upgrade my machine (so that the graphics card fan isn't killing it'self even whilst the system is idling)
Seems mental that you have to reactivate after a simple RAM upgrade, motherboard fair enough, as it could be a totally differnt machine. but an extra stick of RAM? c'mon.
