| Setting up a Thomson Speedtouch 716 Once again i'm an idiot.
Bought a Thomson Speedtouch 716 Wired Router, and for the life of me i can't get it connected to the computer. Hell, i don't even know what wire goes where.
One USB port, 4 Ethernet ports. Trying to connect it to my Xbox 360 so i can get Xbox Live. It's not even installing on the computer, and when i plug it in as opposed to the usual little ditty that plays when something is plugged in, i'm just getting three lower beeps. No idea what the shit's going on, is there any way to manually install it?

| Re: Setting up a Thomson Speedtouch 716 Think i've got it now, all that's stopping the Xbox getting online is the MTU it seems. Any idea on how i can change that?

| Re: Setting up a Thomson Speedtouch 716 Give the MS support pages a go? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908882
When I was setting mine up it looked like it was having bother with MTU settings but that turned out just to be because I was trying to network the Xbox with my box as oppossed to just accessing the router.
I can't mind how I did that or fixed it now but I did consult the MS support and the support on xbox.com and it seemed helpful.

| Re: Setting up a Thomson Speedtouch 716 I cannot stress just how little i know about networks.
Currently i have the ethernet cable that carries the internet connection in the router, and another ethernet cable from the router to the computer. The xbox ethernet cable is in door #3. Working fine on the PC, but can't sign into Xbox Live.

| Re: Setting up a Thomson Speedtouch 716 So let's start from basics. The Speedtouch 716 is a DSL router/modem with 4 LAN ports and a USB connector.
You have a seperate internet device with an ethernet cable providing internet? Are you using DSL at home, or is it cabled broadband?
If you're using cabled broadband then you've bought the wrong hardware. Return it. Consider getting a nice Linksys WRT54G instead.
If you're using DSL, you'll need to configure the Speedtouch to be your DSL modem by plugging in the appropriate phone lines.
What's happening currently is the device you have functions as a switch (or in layman's terms "an internet splitter") - unless the internet connection is coming in from the DSL phone cord, it is completely brainless when it comes to routing. You're trying to split your one internet connection between two devices and it's not capable of doing what you want.
For more information (including manuals) you can see here - http://www.thomson-broadband.co.uk/c...&ProductID=517
but from what I can see in the supplied user manual, you've got a 4 LAN port device with no ethernet WAN - only DSL WAN connectivity - and you're trying to use it as a straight ethernet router.

| Re: Setting up a Thomson Speedtouch 716 Seriously - Linksys WRT54G.
Plug the cabled ethernet from the broadband modem into the slot clearly marked WAN, plug XBox and PC into one of the 4 LAN ports.
Might need to reboot broadband modem.
You'll want a nerd to help you secure your wireless though - by default it's turned on with no password and you don't want to be supplying the neighbourhood |

Click on the image that shows you the ports on the back.
Plug internet into blue, everyone else into yellow.
It'll come with a cd with some next-next-next install shenanigans. You can either use that to enable wireless security (or turn off your wireless altogether if yer not gonna use it) or once you've got it hooked up, open a web browser to http://192.168.1.1
Login with no username, password is "admin" (nae quotes, no caps)
Click "Wireless"
Either disable it in the main wireless tab, or add security on the Wireless Security tab.
If you do go with security, WPA-PSK and TKIP are a good choice, you can use a plain text password from 8-64 characters long (easier to remember than 10-16 hexadecimal digits) |
