With those settings (which look fine), a CD-worth of music should really only end up being between 70–90MB.

Where are you reading the file sizes from, after ripping something in?

at the bottom of the cd rip window

That's the raw audio size, the ripped version will be smaller.

Is that with the CD still in the drive? Looks like you might be reading the file size of the original CD, rather than that of the ripped files. (As Zero says.)

Eject the CD and navigate (however you normally would) to the ripped album in iTunes. See what it says down the bottom of that window.
