Dell Inspiron - dying completely every so often with Windows Updates

its on vista, and for some reason when im switching it on just now, the whole thing just freezes and dies as soon as the windows update available icon appears on the tool bar at the bottom.

I have gone into the control panel and changed the update settings and this appears to have made no difference.

Not quite sure how to resolve it.

It is running generally slow at the moment and my virus protection is up to date, but when i press ctrl alt del when firefox/messenger appears to crash, it takes forever then the screen goes blank and i get the following error message

"Logon process has failed to creat the security options dialogue failure - security options"

Dont quite know how to resolve this, and kind of need it done pronto, as I am relying on it heavily just now for very, very important reasons (job related), and have a lot of important information stored on there at the moment i really need access to.

I will be getting a new system in a couple of months, as the laptop i have is a liability, I've had numerous issues with it, but really need it sorted quickly in the interim

any suggestions as to how to fix this?

    Google helpdesk.

    http://forums.techarena.in/operating...tm#post4256185

"Firewall must be blocking a script that is running in your temp directory. "C:\Users\localadmin\AppData\Local\Temp"
use windows cleanup tool to delete temp files, so delete everything in the temp directory except, temporary internet files and the history folder."

Also, I hope that's the problem - cause other causes of this error seem to be drive errors
