Open source or free/shareware alternative options.

had an idea of making a list of programs that people could get instead of having to buy expensive programs. (or using bit torrent to get them illegally). note some of these original such as internet explorer or safari are free, i just thought i would put some alternatives

Windows

Original : Microsoft Office
Open source : OpenOffice

Original: Internet Explorer
Open Source/Free: Firefox / Opera / Mozilla

Original: Microsoft Outlook / Outlook Express
Open Source: Thunderbird

Original: Msn Messenger
Open Source / Alternative: GAIM / Trillian

Original: Adobe Photoshop
Open Source: GIMP

Original: Discreet 3d Studio Max / Alias Maya
Open Source: Blender

Original: Windows Media Player
Alternative: Winamp / MusicMatch

Original: Visual Studio c++ / borland c++ builder
Open Source / Free:
Borland C++ free command line tools (click on compiler)
Dev-c++
MinGW
Visual C++ free command line tools
OpenWatcom

Original: Adobe Acrobat / Reader
Open Source: PDFCreator

Original: Norton Antivirus / McAfee Virus Scanner
Alternative / Free: AVG Free Edition

Mac

Original: Safari
Alternative: Camino

Original: MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, iChat, etc
Alternatives: Adium, Proteus, Fire

Original: Photoshop
Alternative: GIMP with GIMPshop. (Turns GIMP into as near-as-dammit a clone of Photoshop, skinning it to look and act like the real thing, and renaming tools to match Pshop ones. It's treading on pretty shaky ground as far as Intellectual Property goes, but what the hell).

Original: Finder
Alternative: PathFinder

Quicksilver is not strictly speaking a replacement for anything, but it transforms how you interact with your Mac totally... so you could argue that it's another desktop replacement. Re: Open source or free/shareware alternative options.

if you want an opensource/free MSN messenger that doesn't need major access privilages (such as for Uni or work or college computers ) try AMSN (amsn.sourceforge.net) or jmsn (jmsn.sourceforge.net)

Both run on all sorts of systems

Re: Open source or free/shareware alternative options.

It may help to mention whether things are Windows/linux/Mac options.

I'm Mac OS X all the way, and I'd add Adium and Proteus as MSN/Yahoo/Trillian/etc alternatives. Maybe Fire also.

GIMPshop for OS X turns GIMP into as near-as-dammit a clone of Photoshop, skinning it to look and act like the real thing, and renaming tools to match Pshop ones. It's treading on pretty shaky ground as far as Intellectual Property goes, but what the hell.

PathFinder is a sort of total-desktop-replacement for OS X. Think of it as an alternative OS interface for those who dislike Apple's Finder.

Quicksilver is not strictly speaking a replacement for anything, but it transforms how you interact with your Mac totally... so you could argue that it's another desktop replacement. Apple have started to integrate it's functionality into the latest versions of OS X (under the Spotlight tool), but it's a way off yet.

yeah that would be a good idea. i cant go back and edit my post now though

in the most part they were referring to windows and linux, with the exception of safari / camino which is mac.

i think most of them have linux variants. i never checked all of them.

Re: Open source or free/shareware alternative options.

This would probably make a good FAQ. I'm a little busy right now, but maybe Stew could fire this into that section if he agrees?

Re: Open source or free/shareware alternative options.

Technically most of those arent 'open source', but I cant be bothered changing them all to 'freeware' or 'shareware' as appropriate. The fact that they're free is probably what's important here.

Good link, but I dont think we ought to sticky threads in here given there's only a few to begin with.

Good thread.

How about splitting it further so it's Windows/Mac OSX/Linux distro based?

Few Ubuntu users on AltNation.
