Paris/New York

I thought I would take advantage of the ryanair deal just now so Im heading off to Paris for a week in September. Anyone know any good places to stay? Im also thinking of heading to New York in November for 5 days and again, looking for some advice on places to stay. Dont want to spend too much as i'll be out most of the day doing tourist stuff. Cheers

Re: Paris/New York

I was in New York years ago and it was fantastic. If you are out all day and don't mind a hostel it is a great way to save money. Also you get to meet plenty of people.
I was at http://www.jazzhostels.com/
Great cheap hostel.

Re: Paris/New York

I'd go for a hotel, I've only had bad experiences with hostels. I stupidly went to one of those Jazz ones a few years ago and left in disgust after a day. Overcrowded, no air conditioning and the toilets didn't work. Nasty cheapo places, but that could just be my experience

Re: Paris/New York

Ach, hostels are absolutely fine. Just read the reviews from people who've stayed there previously on www.hostelworld.com, they're usually fairly honest and accurate.

No idea about New York, but The Latin Quarter was a really nice place to stay in Paris. In fact, there's a free tour that leaves from there at 11am in front of the fountain at Place Saint-Michel.

Re: Paris/New York

Last time I was in New York I stayed at the Best Western President; it's pretty inexpensive by New York standards and in a good location, two minutes' walk from times square, and more importantly, Gallagher's steak house

It's here:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...8969&z=16&om=1

and their website is here

Rooms are from about $250 (remember the exchange rate is very favourable now so that's not too bad)

As for Paris, my last trip there I stayed at the Holiday Inn Paris Opera - it's a beautiful Belle-Epoche style building, with a fabulous interior.

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl...5874&z=14&om=1

Rooms are from about £120 a night. Friendly multi-lingual staff etc...

Re: Paris/New York

Cheers for all the advice. Booked up for New York today. BA were have a sale on so go flights for £300 which isn't too bad. Theres quite a few of us going so we booked an apartment instead of hotel which works out a fair bit cheaper.

So what should I do while I'm there? Theres so much to see and do in such a sort space of time. Anywhere you would recommend thats a must? Gallagher's Steak House sounds good

Re: Paris/New York

^ Statue of Liberty has been closed since 2001 anyway, no? The boat tour that goes out in a loop past Liberty Island gives you some great views of the skyline etc though.

The views from the Empire State Building are absolutely astonishing, but it's a hefty queue by any standards. Sadly you can't do any more than peek inside the Chrysler building, though it's the outside that's most worth looking at. Grand Central Station is as beautiful as you expect from all the films you've seen it in; if you find yourself nearby have a look.

The Corner Bistro in the West Village has been doing the best burgers in the city since my parents moved there in the 60s and the atmosphere around that whole neighbourhood is wonderful.

The most fun I had last time I was there was probably just walking south along Broadway from Times Square down to around where the Flatiron building is: I've never seen so much variety in such a short space of time, and it's fun watching the touristy-ness disolve away and be replaced with "real" New Yorkers going about their business.

Bus tours of the sights are often highly praised, and there's various different angles; eg there's one that'll show you all the TV and movie locations for example (the Cosby house, the Friends appartment etc etc) but Manhattan is such a small place you can probably walk to must of the things that interest you anyway.

November will be "football" season, if you have any interest in that stuff you can check schedules for the Giants and Jets to see if they're at home when you're there, they both play just across the river in "Joisey"

Eat lots, especially from street vendors - not to disparage our very own ever-faithful The Maggie, but they do that better there!

If you wanna see a show you can usually get tickets by queueing on the day at the place on Times Square: I have a friend who just saw Rent and recommends it but there's loads to choose from.

Spend some time in Central park; it helps you get your breath back and again will be a good glimpse of life, rather than tourism.

I haven't said anything that guide books couldn't have told you, but the fact I've typed this much - that I'm so excited for someone else going there - should tell you something in itself. Enjoy!

Cheers for the info. Im looking forward to it even more now! Think i'll give the statue of liberty a miss. Apparently it can take hours to get past security to get onto the island and if you want to go inside you have to go through a 2nd check point. And your right - they dont let you go to the top anymore I wanted to fulfil my childhood dream after watching Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.

Cant wait to go to the empire state building tho

Im flying into Newark. Any idea whats the best way to get into Manhattan. Bus, taxi, train or limo?

Re: Paris/New York

I typed up half a post here and lost it, rage!

Aye though New York's amaaaaazing you're so jammy.

The only standard toursity thing I'd advise against is don't make any effort to go to Century 21. As you're a straight male I dunno if you're planning on doing much shopping but aye, it's really hyped up and also really shit. However if you're planning on going to Ground Zero its right across the road, so no harm done.

When we were there we just walked everywhere until like the last day when we discovered that the subway's really easy and not that terrifying. However, as toast said, you CAN just walk everywhere in Manhattan and get a lot more seen.

I'd advise getting a guidebook or at least a map of some sorts, getting from a to b is really easy and it's near impossible to get lost for the most part, but we found it really useful for planning our days.

Definitely go and see SOMETHING on Broadway, it'd be a crime not to.

You also have to do Times Square at night, and we ate at an amazing huuuuuge steak place there that just serve heart attacks on plates. Was awesome. Just full of stereotypical massive black guys and their very glam birds called LaTaniqua and the likes. I could have spent a week in there.

I can think of approx ONE MILLION more things to suggest but I'll stop.
