    Traveling Alone

Has anyone here ever done some traveling on their own?

I quite fancy going to some places in Europe this year but most of the folk I know aren't interested.

So, been away yourself for a few days? Know of any sites where people meet up whilst in their travels etc?

    Mon, help me oot here.

    Re: Traveling Alone

I've been considering doing this actually, just getting one of those Euro train tickets and fucking off for like a week or so around the place. I think depending where you decide to go will make the difference, as going to Eastern europe on your own, I guess, may seem like a bit of a risk.

    Re: Traveling Alone

I travelled for 2 weeks before, just countries i wanted to see

enjoyed most of it, ended up meetin a guy from glasgow i ended up working with 6 month after i got back!

went to eastern europe mainly, poland russia, ukraine, lithuania, czech republic, belarus, slovakia, germany then home.

    cheap aswell!

best advice is to fly to Riga then move on from there, cheap as fock and a good introduction to eastern europe

    Re: Traveling Alone

Done stuff on my own for a day or so but nothing major but a good time was by all. Me especially. Seeing no-one else I knew was there. Strange that.

Anyone I know who's done it couldn't recommend it enough. I guess it depends person to person but if you're the type of guy that would look forward to it, rather than worry about it, it should be worth doing.

If you doing the whole hostel thing tho' friends inform me that you should bring a book. When you finish it you can swap it with other people for when you're travelling.

    Re: Traveling Alone

not to much at all, i think the most expensive thing was a £90 visa into russia.

Flights to riga were like £19 and flights home from germany were £30

the rest was £10 a night b&b/hostels and train fares which were pennies.

all in all, maybe about £800 tops

    Re: Traveling Alone

I've done the UK on buses for a week on my own, but at a few stops I met folk I knew for a coffee, and home was always a train ride back if I needed.

I also spent two days alone in New York, I got really bored of the city and decided to leave it to head to Asbury Park. I think New York would of been better if I had some one to share it with. And just yesterday I'm back from Munich after being there on my own for a week, well, not truly on my own cause there was a conference, but the travelling and tail end days were solo.

I quite like it, I'm normally quite a shy introverted place, but if you are in a strange place on your own it forces you to change. I was staying in Youth Hostels, and didn't really see the "community" aspect thats portrayed in the films, people kept themselves to themselves with out really chatting to people outside their group. Not once on any bus/plane/train that I've been on has someone started chatting to the stranger next to them, I'm guilty of that aswell, but only after the first couple of times fell on its arse!

    Re: Traveling Alone

Travelling on your own is by far the best way to do it. I spent 3 months travelling across the whole of north America back in 2000. I was only 18 amd it was trhe best experience of my life.

You dont have to worry about deciding with someone where to go or what to do, just do it

Sounds like fun. I'm just worried that I wont meet folk whilst I'm there.

I've been all over Europe on my todd, I've no problem with it at all. Why wait on other people? If you want to do something, do it.

    Re: Traveling Alone

I went to California for 3 months myself.. but i met a whole load of ppl otherwise it woulda been pretty boring. Being on your own kinda makes you realise that things will only happen if you make them.

Travelling on your own is a worthwhile experience but it is pretty boring and things sometimes work out cheaper if there are more of you.

    Re: Traveling Alone

I'm travelling Europe in April. A few dates my boyfriend is going with me but the majority he has work...

    I'm scared

I just don't fancy being in another country, not knowing the native language. I'm a bit shy too (well with people I don't know!) and yes...I have seen Hostel
